Two Day Hand Spinning Course: Fleece to Fibre

Learn the art of hand spinning at this two-day craft course in the Lake District!

2 x 6 hours Class size 3     label £195

Love all things woolly? Come along to this fun-packed weekend in the Lake District National Park and discover the absorbing art of hand spinning.

During this two-day craft course, you will create and finish your own skein of hand-spun fibre.

To start out, you will learn all about fleece selection, purchase and preparation from your friendly expert teacher. You will then move on to carding on a drum carder and then start to learn how to spin on a drop spindle.

Having mastered drafting on the drop spindle (with plenty of hands-on action), it will be time to progress to a wheel. Your teacher will guide you as they take you through setting up a wheel and the principles of tension. You will then turn your prepared batts into spun singles before learning the principles behind plying.

Along the way, you will be encouraged to enjoy the rural setting as you lose yourself to this spellbinding craft. Don't worry if this is your first introduction to hand spinning, you'll receive plenty of hands-on help and tuition in a private class.

Your teacher, Elaine Ware, brings many years of experience in hand spinning and is sure to impart plenty of her in-depth knowledge of the subject to you.

By the end of the two days, you'll walk away with some amazing hand spinning skills under your belt and of course, a deep sense of accomplishment!

Two Day Hand Spinning Course: Fleece to Fibre location
Your teacher

Cartmel Hand-spinning School was set up by hand spinner Elaine Ware in November 2013. It started small, with just two people in a workshop, and grew. Today, in 2021, over 250 people from around the globe have learned the ancient craft of hand spinning here at Cartmel Handspun.

We believe our ‘school’ for spinning, (and now weaving), is unique. The focus is on in-depth learning in a dedicated well-equipped environment with an optimum opportunity for personal tuition. The aim is to positively nurture the current revival of interest in all things woolly.

Courses run throughout the year. Most course groups are limited to three persons to provide maximum one-to-one attention.

Elaine Ware learned to spin 60 years ago whilst at primary school. Since Cartmel Handspun began in 2013, students of all ages and from all walks of life have come across the UK, Europe, Asia, Scandinavia, and the Americas.
