What you'll do
One-to-one tuition for complete beginners, to those who can already spin or are self-taught and want to work on specific aspects of technique. Help for those with spinning confidence issues.
Bring your own wheel or use one of mine. Sort out your glitches. Dates to suit. Rural location. Use of a car essential. Flexible hours on demand.
Looking for a new craft to get your hands on or need some help getting to grips with spinning on a wheel? Enjoy private, one-to-one tuition at this class in the Lakes and discover the wonderful world of hand spinning.
Your friendly teacher, Elaine Ware, will share with you her many years of experience in hand spinning as well as her in-depth knowledge of the subject through hands-on help and clear demonstrations.
This craft course covers:
- Fibre selection and preparation (looking at all sorts of fleeces to find what's best for your needs).
- Carding and blending fibres using a drum carder.
- Techniques for drafting using a drop spindle.
- Spinning on a wheel.
- Plying – making a 2 ply yarn.
- The Niddy Noddy, skein making and finishing.
- Setting up your wheel.
- Further resources and what to do next.
Whether you're completely new to this fun and engaging craft or have had a go before, this course can be adapted to suit the individual level of ability and experience as it is taught in small groups of up to four people.
By the end of the day, you will have a working knowledge of all the techniques necessary to go away and start spinning your own yarn.

Cartmel Hand-spinning School was set up by hand spinner Elaine Ware in November 2013. It started small, with just two people in a workshop, and grew. Today, in 2021, over 250 people from around the globe have learned the ancient craft of hand spinning here at Cartmel Handspun.
We believe our ‘school’ for spinning, (and now weaving), is unique. The focus is on in-depth learning in a dedicated well-equipped environment with an optimum opportunity for personal tuition. The aim is to positively nurture the current revival of interest in all things woolly.
Courses run throughout the year. Most course groups are limited to three persons to provide maximum one-to-one attention.
Elaine Ware learned to spin 60 years ago whilst at primary school. Since Cartmel Handspun began in 2013, students of all ages and from all walks of life have come across the UK, Europe, Asia, Scandinavia, and the Americas.
