Shanna Apr 2024

Wonderful carving class suitable for complete beginners or potentially amateurs of similar activities (ex. I whittle, but found the wood and knife techniques to be very different for this type of carving!). The class was the right size to allow interaction / questions during the instruction component, and to enable help during practical execution. 3h was just the right length to carve a spatula and potentially a quick butter spreader on the side.

Tim is super friendly and makes the class educational, engaging and fun. He makes sure everyone leaves with a nice take-home piece of furniture and ensures everyone is safe and attended-to at all times.

Highly recommended.

Douglas Apr 2024

A really great experience, would recommend it to anyone!

Tim was very welcoming and an amazing teacher. Every step was explained perfectly to allow us to really take ownership of the making process.

Ended the day taking home a lovely new stool and a lot of new skills!

Michael Hemy Apr 2024

Making a stool

Tim’s teaching through each of the stages was incredibly well explained, methodical, he was always willing to help, safety was paramount.

The workshop is well resourced, a welcome inclusive and friendly atmosphere.

Very good value for money!

We loved the joining and shaping best.

Looking forward to making a bench
to match our beautiful stools on the next course.

Really good fun, the instructors were patient and provided good background on the techniques used.

Nice setting (in a city farm), cafe is really nice.

It's a long day as there's a lot to cover/do so bring drink ad snacks and sort out dinner the day before (or get a take away when you get home).

Robert Mar 2024

It was a good day and I learned a lot about the process. Enjoyable and satisfying to produce a tool at the end of it

Juliette Gauvain Jan 2024

Tim was a great teacher, funny, caring, patient, and knowledgeable. The class was great and it makes me want to come back for more!

Naomi Jan 2024

I was given a Greenwood Guild bowl carving workshop as a birthday present, and it was one of the best gifts ever! Had such a fun and satisfying day learning how to use tools to make my bowl. It was a really relaxed, friendly environment thanks to our teacher Tim, who is fantastically knowledgeable and an all round lovely person.
All the materials were provided and I came home the proud owner of my own hand made bowl.

Stepney City Farm is a perfect location (and the cafe is very nice too).

Would recommend to anyone looking for a chance to exercise their creative spirit.

Russell Nov 2023

Had a great time. Tim was really friendly and helpful, explaining things clearly but encouraging us to do the work. Fantastic day, highly recommended.

Joel Nov 2023

Loved this class. Great location right in the middle of the farm, Tim was very friendly and helpful, and everyone walked away with something they could be proud of. Would highlly recommend!

Anne Baruch Nov 2023

Great day with Tim carving a greenwood bowl. Small class in the lovely setting of Stepney City Farm

Nick Nov 2023

I couldn’t recommend a day at The Greenwood Guild more. Incredibly well organised class with a small group, including plenty of 1-1 guidance throughout the day. Everyone left with lots of new skills, and a hand carved bowl. Would also be a great gift for anyone. I’m looking forward to another workshop!

Wendie Ottewill Nov 2023

Amazing course. Superb course leader Tim.
Course hands on from the kick off. Interesting and active course. Brilliant how you actually get straight into the making and worked with metal as well as wood. Nice class size and great outdoor (ish) setting.

Tom Nov 2023

I haven't had so much fun in ages! I will treasure the knife, it was fantastic to make it.

Maryanne McGinn Nov 2023

Thanks to Tim and Alex for running this well paced and enjoyable class; there was plenty of technical help on hand, I learned lots of new things here, and everyone went home with a handled knife which they had made themselves.

I appreciated the emphasis on safety at all times, the good lighting, and the readily available refreshments.

I have to mention also the great venue at Stepney City Farm: nice cafe and lots of sheep and goats frolicking in the fields.

Great day and would recommend to anyone. Tim was a fantastic teacher and very happy with the end result!

Dan Turner Nov 2023

The course was well run and professional.
Each stage was explained and support from the team was available at all times.
Individual advice and tuition was given to students at each stage of the process.
The class was suitable for all levels.

Richard Goody Nov 2023

Great fun with a nice crowd of novices (like me!). Really helpful, knowledgeable experts ( thanks Tim and Alex) who definitely made the whole knife forging process a success for everyone. Nice City Farm setting with Cafe and farmers market on site. Brilliant day :)

Sharon Cientanni Oct 2023

Really enjoyed my afternoon at Spatula carving, Tim was great and very patient with us newbies, also had coffee and snacks! Great day, great place, will be coming back.

Janita Mistry Oct 2023

Tim is a great teacher and we loved his dry sense humour!
The class provides you with all the tools required to carve the spatula and knife. Tim teaches a variety of techniques to make both items and runs through them as many times as needed. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed the class and would recommend to anyone, especially if looking for a new hobby. The class is great value for money and in any case being taught by someone who is passionate about what they do is priceless!

Ashley Stanton-Yonge Oct 2023

Great course! I would totally recommend it. Very nice introduction to manual woodwork with a very knowledgeable, helpful and enthusiastic teacher.

Mark Oct 2023

This was a fantastic day from start to finish. The venue was perfect for the 6 students and Tim, well what can I say, knowledgable, calm, confident and put everyone at ease. He explained everything, the tools we were using, source of the wood, how, why and only stepped in if required. We may have only made a 3 legged stool, but I am hooked, thanks Tim.

Kevin Summers Oct 2023

This one day course is fantasticyou arrive at 10 o’clock and leave at 6 o’clock with a three legged stool that you have made yourself with 90% traditional hand tools!….

I went on the knife making course with my son and it was superb! The teachers, Tom and Alex, were extremely knowledgeable and professional, the environment / tools / facilities were all of a very high standard, and I really can’t think how the day could be improved. If you have not been on one of these courses you’re really missing out

Emily Aug 2023

If someone is considering doing this, just go do it. Tim was an excellent teacher - both in terms of what he taught, how he taught it, and how good natured and good humoured he was while teaching us. He made the day super fun, and I learned a lot that I didn't expect to learn. He's very warm and personable, so even if you are coming solo - he'll make you feel very welcome. The venue is brilliant, and the materials are sustainably sourced and super high quality (and gorgeous wood). It was excellent value for money and I'd definitely recommend it and/or go to other classes with Tim. Thanks for everything Tim! Daisy +1, aka Emily ;)

This class was great, set in a beautiful workshop on Stepney City Farm, and led by a really engaging and fun teacher. Everything was clear and explained well, and we all learned a lot. A really satisfying way to spend a day and highly recommended- and conveniently right next to a farm cafe for lunch afterwards. Looking forward to using what I made once it’s oiled!

Peter Basile Jun 2023

Tim is brilliant - a great instructor and fun to be with too. I’ll be recommending this course to all my friends.

Ciara Johnson Jun 2023

I can’t recommend the stool making workshop enough. Tim was incredibly friendly, easy to understand and gave great one on one support to all. I thought I’d botch it but was pleasantly surprised! I think it’s great value for money based on the amount you cover in the time given and you get a handmade stool out of it!

If you’re deliberating, I’d say just give it a go. The group was really lovely, and max people is 6 so it’s not too full on in number.

All in all, loved it and going to do more!

Tim was excellent. The location is fantastic. The course was fabulous. I’d recommend this course to anyone interested in learning woodworking the traditional way.

Federeico Nannini Apr 2023

Great Sunday! Really enjoyed Tim’s workshop and all the tips learned around traditional wood work. Don’t pick this course if you expect mechanical tools and glue, this is really about the essence of the material and how to treat it according to its natural properties.

Marc Boucherat Mar 2023

Tim was a great teacher, relaxed, knowledgeable and funny. Good venue, easy to get to and plenty of facilities on site. All materials and tools provided were good and because the teaching was good and the group small (5 participants) we all achieved a lot! Excellent value and a really satisfying day… thanks

Jamie Laws Mar 2023

Tim was an excellent educator and all round down to earth person. Very approachable and clearly passionate about woodworking, answering all related queries in detail and in layman’s terms. Explaining why we used certain material and tools. Would highly recommend to anyone (coming from someone with no woodworking skills or background). And you come away with a new statement piece for your home. Also nice being in the setting of Stepney City Farm, really created that extra bit of immersion, rather than a generic municipal style building.

Mike Hulme Mar 2023

An excellent day and I really enjoyed my experience.
Tim is an exceptional tutor being highly personable and extremely capable. The traditional skills taught are hugely interesting and very important in that such techniques of woodworking deserve to be preserved and shared. The tutorial group cohort were great and the workshop atmosphere most pleasant. I would thoroughly recommend undertaking a course at the Green Wood Guild - immerse yourself in traditional craft skills.

Tim runs the course with a lot of enthusiasm,he caters for people of all standards including beginners everyone is introduced to a vast selection of tools though the day.A lot of people new each other on this course as they were members of the popular Spoonclub also run by Tim.Everyone left with beautifully crafted bowl and had a thoroughly enjoyable day.

Isabelle Maltzan Jan 2023

The teacher was great and we enjoyed the day very much. Tim spend his time equally between everyone so that we felt supported and well looked after. Obviously, it is very expensive, so for me it is something you can only do for a special occasion but it was well worth it.

Sue Dromey Jan 2023

My review is for the Kuksa/Bowl carving day. I did a kuksa.
First of all, Tim is a calm, welcoming, encouraging, skilled teacher, with a positive attitude, attuned to everybody, so no-one has to worry about making a mistake. He brought us all along at our own pace and was there to help when we needed it.
There was a variety of skill and a complete beginner in the group and we were all happy with our acheivements of one day. We did not completely finish and that is ok as carving a kuksa is quite a challenge. It was hard, rewarding work. Four of us in the group knew each other from Tuesday night Spoonclub and the 5th was welcomed into the camaraderie.
I think it would be a great course to do with a bunch of family or friends. Solo is also fine and no-one should be shy about coming on their own.
There was coffee, biscuits and breaks throughout the day and some of the group brought cake and cheese and bread too. The cafe was open and the Saturday market was on. We also saw the goats on their daily walk!
We were working with alder which is a safe bet for bowls and kuksas.
I enjoyed everything about the day. It produced a luisa and a healthy tiredness, born of creating with the hands. I went home to have an epsom salt bath. Thank you Tim x

Alex Rinsler Nov 2022

This was the best craft experience I've had. The teachers coached us through every step brilliantly. I left feeling inspired and proud of my achievement.

Eddie Wright Nov 2022

The class was very good. Tom and Tim, the instructors, were both very knowledgeable and were able to clearly pass on the details of what we needed to do at each stage.

I enjoyed the class and at the end of the day had successfully forged and fitted a sharp wood caring knife.

Adrian Nov 2022

Everything was great organised and perfectly timed. I wish we had more time to learn about the details about the material used (steel types etc.) and to get to know more about blacksmiting. The foundation theory should be covered, maybe by some fun interactive talk/quizes.
If we had bit more time it would have been good to have more interaction between participants and the teacher to create the bound and further motivation.
In general I would reccomend the course and the venue to anyone interested in carving in wood and getting to work with steel.
I came back with a great and sharp small knife.
I'm looking forward to see more courses for blacksmithing in particular at this venue!

A really great day. Tim's a very good instructor - just the right balance of telling and showing you how to do things, then letting you get on with it and gently keeping an eye on how you're getting on and helping out when needed. Stepney City Farm is a lovely location too. I thoroughly recommend this class.

Claire Mitchell Nov 2022

What a great class, I can't believe I made a stool in just one day! Bowl Carving Woodworking Class review by Francis Marshall - London

Daniel Brady May 2022

Tom was a great instructor. He gave us the important information and training without overloading us, and he was happy to explain more, answer questions, and help us achieve specific results with our knives. He kept us moving at a good pace, and rather than rushing the folks whose knives were progressing slower than others he simply helped us catch up so we could all stay on track together. I would love to take another of his workshops, if he does any others.

The woodcraft workshop at Stepney Farm is a small space but well-suited to classes like this, and the atmosphere of the farm itself really sets the tone for a day of woodcraft. All materials were provided and more than adequate for our purposes.

The workshops at the Green Wood Guild are expensive, but I don't think they are unreasonable for the experiences I've had. You're paying for 8+ hours of personal instruction from an experienced craftsman, plus the cost of the materials and exclusive use of the woodworking studio and its resources. You also get to take what you make, not just what you learn. So if you're like me and can afford to spend money on passions but aren't certain woodcraft is for you, I'd recommend these workshops: the instructors are quite passionate about what they're teaching you, so even if they don't end up passing along their passion to you, you'll at least have a good time.

I had a really great experience at the workshop. It was my first time woodworking and Tim made it enjoyable and gave me techniques and information for taking woodwork further if I so wished. The workshop is on a nice little city farm with a really nice cafe on site (although the cafe is a tad pricey the food was tasty!). All materials were provided by the workshop and I walked away with a wooden bowl that I carved myself and I couldn't be happier!
