Bowl Carving Woodworking Class

Get to grips with working with wood at this beginners' wood carving workshop in London.

8 hours Class size 1 to 6 (public classes), 6 to 8 label £150

Ever wanted to give wood carving a go but didn't know where to begin? Or maybe you want to make a unique gift for a loved one. Learn to make a beautiful wooden bowl from native green hardwood using ancient hand tools at this one-of-a-kind woodworking class in London.

Hosted at Stepney City Farm by a local expert, you'll learn the fundamentals of using traditional edge tools to carve yourself a beautiful wooden bowl. Over the course of the day you will use an axe and drawknife to shape the outside of the bowl, and a gouge and hook knife to refine the inside.

If you're looking for something a little different, you can also opt to carve a kuksa – a traditional Scandinavian style of drinking cup. The ideal tool for drinking coffee, the kuksa develops a rich patina from the coffee grounds over time. Great to use at home but also much better in a backpack than a fragile and heavy ceramic mug - a fantastic gift for any outdoorsy friends!

In addition to giving you an introduction to a variety of hand tools, the class will give you a real insight into the design and function of objects which have been used by humans for thousands of years. As you carve the object of your choice, you will learn many different carving techniques and about how green wood differs from seasoned wood.

You'll leave the class with your gorgeous handmade bowl or kuksa to cherish forever, along with the skills, knowledge and confidence to carry on this traditional, satisfying hobby.

Great day with Tim carving a greenwood bowl. Small class in the lovely setting of Stepney City Farm

I couldn’t recommend a day at The Greenwood Guild more. Incredibly well organised class with a small group, including plenty of 1-1 guidance throughout the day. Everyone left with lots of new skills, and a hand carved bowl. Would also be a great gift for anyone. I’m looking forward to another workshop!

An excellent day and I really enjoyed my experience.
Tim is an exceptional tutor being highly personable and extremely capable. The traditional skills taught are hugely interesting and very important in that such techniques of woodworking deserve to be preserved and shared. The tutorial group cohort were great and the workshop atmosphere most pleasant. I would thoroughly recommend undertaking a course at the Green Wood Guild - immerse yourself in traditional craft skills.

Knowledgeable and patient instructor ready to help.
Tim was great in explaining how to use the tools (safely and effectively) and providing feedback throughout the workshop.

Tim runs the course with a lot of enthusiasm,he caters for people of all standards including beginners everyone is introduced to a vast selection of tools though the day.A lot of people new each other on this course as they were members of the popular Spoonclub also run by Tim.Everyone left with beautifully crafted bowl and had a thoroughly enjoyable day.

The teacher was great and we enjoyed the day very much. Tim spend his time equally between everyone so that we felt supported and well looked after. Obviously, it is very expensive, so for me it is something you can only do for a special occasion but it was well worth it.

My review is for the Kuksa/Bowl carving day. I did a kuksa.
First of all, Tim is a calm, welcoming, encouraging, skilled teacher, with a positive attitude, attuned to everybody, so no-one has to worry about making a mistake. He brought us all along at our own pace and was there to help when we needed it.
There was a variety of skill and a complete beginner in the group and we were all happy with our acheivements of one day. We did not completely finish and that is ok as carving a kuksa is quite a challenge. It was hard, rewarding work. Four of us in the group knew each other from Tuesday night Spoonclub and the 5th was welcomed into the camaraderie.
I think it would be a great course to do with a bunch of family or friends. Solo is also fine and no-one should be shy about coming on their own.
There was coffee, biscuits and breaks throughout the day and some of the group brought cake and cheese and bread too. The cafe was open and the Saturday market was on. We also saw the goats on their daily walk!
We were working with alder which is a safe bet for bowls and kuksas.
I enjoyed everything about the day. It produced a luisa and a healthy tiredness, born of creating with the hands. I went home to have an epsom salt bath. Thank you Tim x

It was a great woodworking class and a very fulfilling day! Although this was my first time doing it, with Tim's help, I got it done and I think it's pretty good. It's on a farm, everything is so good. This course is for everyone!

A fantastic day that, quite simply, flew by. Tim is a great trainer. He took us step by step through the process of making our bowls and Kuska cup. He was patient and extremely helpful. The workshop is set up really well and I never knew that there are so many tools that can be used for wood carving. Thank you

I had a really great experience at the workshop. It was my first time woodworking and Tim made it enjoyable and gave me techniques and information for taking woodwork further if I so wished. The workshop is on a nice little city farm with a really nice cafe on site (although the cafe is a tad pricey the food was tasty!). All materials were provided by the workshop and I walked away with a wooden bowl that I carved myself and I couldn't be happier!
