Ever wanted to give wood carving a go but didn't know where to begin? Or maybe you want to make a unique gift for a loved one. Learn to make a beautiful wooden bowl from native green hardwood using ancient hand tools at this one-of-a-kind woodworking class in London.
Hosted at Stepney City Farm by a local expert, you'll learn the fundamentals of using traditional edge tools to carve yourself a beautiful wooden bowl. Over the course of the day you will use an axe and drawknife to shape the outside of the bowl, and a gouge and hook knife to refine the inside.
If you're looking for something a little different, you can also opt to carve a kuksa – a traditional Scandinavian style of drinking cup. The ideal tool for drinking coffee, the kuksa develops a rich patina from the coffee grounds over time. Great to use at home but also much better in a backpack than a fragile and heavy ceramic mug - a fantastic gift for any outdoorsy friends!
In addition to giving you an introduction to a variety of hand tools, the class will give you a real insight into the design and function of objects which have been used by humans for thousands of years. As you carve the object of your choice, you will learn many different carving techniques and about how green wood differs from seasoned wood.
You'll leave the class with your gorgeous handmade bowl or kuksa to cherish forever, along with the skills, knowledge and confidence to carry on this traditional, satisfying hobby.
