I'm Rebecca, founder of Upholstery Classes Edinburgh, where I run hands-on workshops designed to make traditional and modern upholstery skills accessible and enjoyable.
My journey into upholstery began through a love of making, restoring, and understanding how things are constructed. I trained in Furniture Restoration, where I developed a strong foundation in traditional techniques and gained an appreciation for the skills behind well-made furniture.
After completing my course, I worked in a high-end upholstery workshop, gaining experience in a professional environment. This gave me valuable insight into the standards and processes involved in creating beautiful modern upholstered furniture.
I continued to develop my skills through professional upholstery training with the AMUSF (Association of Master Upholsterers and Soft Furnishers) before starting my own upholstery studio, Selvedge Edge Upholstery. I now work on a wide range of restoration, reupholstery, and bespoke projects. I was honored to receive the Bob Fowlds Grant through AMUSF, which supported me in developing my business and continuing to grow within the upholstery industry.
What makes our classes different is that they are taught by people who actively work in the upholstery trade. Alongside me, I teach with another experienced upholsterer who brings their own professional background and practical knowledge. Together, we share traditional methods, modern techniques, and the real-world problem solving that comes from working on furniture every day.
We believe students learn best when they understand not only how to do something, but why it is done that way. Upholstery is a craft full of small details that can transform the finished result, and we love sharing the knowledge and techniques that make a piece truly special.
Teaching has always been an important part of my story. Before starting these classes, I taught woodworking at the Edinburgh Tool Library, supporting women makers through accessible workshop sessions. I helped establish women and non-binary open workshop sessions and have also taught woodturning at Edinburgh Open Workshop. Creating welcoming spaces where people feel confident learning practical skills has always been something I’m passionate about.
Our workshops are intentionally small and hands-on, with two tutors available throughout the day so everyone receives plenty of support. Whether you’re completely new to upholstery or looking to build on existing skills, our aim is for you to leave with new confidence, knowledge, and a piece you’re proud of.
