With a maximum of six students and two tutors, you’ll receive plenty of hands-on support throughout the day. Both tutors are professional upholsterers with experience in high-end commercial upholstery workshops, so you’ll learn industry techniques and practical skills in a friendly, supportive environment.

- An apron or clothes you don’t mind getting messy.

The workshop takes place at Edinburgh Open Workshop, which is easily accessible by public transport. There are frequent bus services nearby, and The Shore tram stop is just a short walk away. On-street parking is available in the surrounding area. Please note that the workshop involves some hands-on practical work, including standing, bending and using upholstery tools. If you have any accessibility requirements or questions about the space, please get in touch before booking and we’ll be happy to help.
Your teacher
I’m Rebecca, founder of Upholstery Classes Edinburgh. I run small, beginner-friendly classes and workshops where you can learn upholstery skills in a relaxed, hands-on environment.I trained in Furniture Restoration before moving into upholstery, working in high-end workshops and later completing further training with the AMUSF (Association of Master Upholsterers and Soft Furnishers). I now run my own upholstery studio, Selvedge Edge Upholstery, here in Leith, where I work on commissioned pieces, restoration and reupholstery projects.I teach alongside another experienced upholsterer, and between us we have over 15 years of experience working with furniture. We’re both trained in traditional and modern upholstery, and have worked in the industry both as employees and self-employed upholsterers. We bring that practical experience into our classes and enjoy sharing what we’ve learned along the way.I’ve also taught woodworking at Edinburgh Tool Library, where I helped set up women and non-binary open workshop sessions, and more recently taught woodturning classes at Edinburgh Open Workshop. I know how intimidating it can be when you’re new to a workshop environment, so creating a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere is important to me.Our classes are kept small, with two tutors throughout the day, so there’s plenty of time for questions and one-to-one help. You don’t need any previous experience - just come along and give it a go!
