Hand Building Pottery / Ceramics Experience

Build and paint your brand new pottery piece in Edinburgh.

2 hours Location Edinburgh Class size 1 to 4 (public classes), 1 to 6   £65

Discover hand-building pottery in Edinburgh and shape, sculpt, and create your very own clay piece in a relaxed, welcoming studio. Whether you're a complete beginner or someone looking for a regular creative escape, this is your space to explore working with clay and leave with something beautifully handmade.
Your pottery journey unfolds step by step:
Meet your tutor who'll introduce the session and get everyone comfortable with their clay and apron. Then comes the real fun – discovering how clay feels, how it behaves, and the golden rules of hand-building to set you up for success.
You'll start with the pinch pot, an old pottery technique there is. Your tutor will guide you through transforming a simple ball of clay into a beautiful, organic form using just your hands – perfect for building confidence and developing a real feel for the material.
From there, you'll take your skills further with coil building. You'll roll, stack, and blend coils of clay to build walls, add height, and create more ambitious shapes. This is where your piece truly comes to life.
Next comes the creative freedom – adding your own personality through texture, pattern, decorative details, or sculptural elements. Your tutor will show you simple tools and techniques to make your piece entirely yours.
Before you leave, you'll choose your underglaze colour and finish, painting on the details you want. Your tutor will walk you through the options so you can picture exactly how your finished piece will look. Then you'll smooth and refine everything, sign the base, and your tutor will explain what happens next – how your work is dried, fired, and glazed ready for collection.
Your finished creation will be kiln-fired and ready to collect within 3–4 weeks – a genuine artistic keepsake you've made with your own hands.

Hi, I'm Charlotte, clay-obsessed, self-taught, and six years deep into a love affair with ceramics! I fell into ceramics during the pandemic and never looked back (my hands have never been the same, in the best way).
There's nothing quite like the moment a wobbly lump of clay turns into something real on a pottery wheel. It's messy, meditative, and ridiculously fun, which is exactly why my wheel throwing classes make such a brilliant date night idea in Edinburgh. Trade the usual dinner-and-a-movie for clay under your nails, a few giggles, and a one-of-a-kind creation to take home (bonus points if it's a little wonky).
I taught pottery classes in Porto before swapping it for Edinburgh, where I've just opened my new ceramics studio. Whether you're booking a romantic date night, a fun activity with friends, or a solo creative escape, I'll guide you through beginner-friendly wheel throwing in a relaxed, no-pressure space.
