Bring Your Own Upholstery Project Weekend Workshop

Transform your own piece of furniture over a weekend with hands-on upholstery guidance and expert instruction.

2 x 7 hours Class size 3 to 8 guests       £397

Have you got a piece of furniture you wish looked different, or that just doesn’t quite fit your space anymore? Bring it along and spend a full weekend transforming it with guided, hands-on support.
This two-day, in-person workshop is designed for people who want to work on their own upholstery project while developing practical skills along the way. You’ll work at your own pace, with your project providing the focus for the weekend and tuition tailored to the piece you bring.
With two professional upholsterers on hand throughout the weekend, you’ll have plenty of opportunity for individual guidance, demonstrations, and troubleshooting. Both tutors have worked in professional upholstery workshops, including high-end commercial furniture, and bring real industry experience to the class. You’ll learn not just how to carry out the techniques, but how to approach a piece and problem-solve.
Whether you’re a confident beginner looking to develop your skills or have some previous upholstery experience and want support with a particular project, this is an opportunity to learn while working on something personal and hands-on.
By the end of the weekend, you’ll have made real progress on your piece and gained practical skills and knowledge that you can take forward into future upholstery projects.

What to bring
  • Your own suitable upholstery project — please see the project requirements below.
  • Your chosen upholstery fabric. If you haven't sourced fabric yet, we can also order this for you from our extensive range of fabric suppliers.
  • Any specific materials you've already purchased for your project, such as trims or specialist fabrics.
  • Clothing you don't mind getting messy.
  • Closed-toe shoes.
  • A packed lunch or snacks. There will be a 30-minute lunch break each day.
Your project
Once you've booked, please send through clear photographs, a brief description, and the measurements of the furniture you'd like to work on. Seeing your piece in advance allows us to advise on materials, plan the workshop, and make sure your project is suitable for the two-day format.
Suitable projects are typically small to medium-sized pieces such as dining chairs, footstools, and small occasional chairs. Larger or more complex furniture, including sofas, wing chairs, and sprung antique pieces, are generally not suitable for this workshop.
If your original project isn't quite right for the timeframe, we'll be happy to suggest adjustments or alternative options that will work well within the class.
Every project is different, so while some pieces may be completed over the two days, others may reach a very advanced stage rather than being fully finished. Reviewing your project beforehand helps us make sure it's well matched to the workshop and gives you the best opportunity to make great progress over the weekend.
Session repeats

This class series runs over 2 consecutive days.

I’m Rebecca, founder of Upholstery Classes Edinburgh. I run small, beginner-friendly classes and workshops where you can learn upholstery skills in a relaxed, hands-on environment.
I trained in Furniture Restoration before moving into upholstery, working in high-end workshops and later completing further training with the AMUSF (Association of Master Upholsterers and Soft Furnishers). I now run my own upholstery studio, Selvedge Edge Upholstery, here in Leith, where I work on commissioned pieces, restoration and reupholstery projects.
I teach alongside another experienced upholsterer, and between us we have over 15 years of experience working with furniture. We’re both trained in traditional and modern upholstery, and have worked in the industry both as employees and self-employed upholsterers. We bring that practical experience into our classes and enjoy sharing what we’ve learned along the way.
I’ve also taught woodworking at Edinburgh Tool Library, where I helped set up women and non-binary open workshop sessions, and more recently taught woodturning classes at Edinburgh Open Workshop. I know how intimidating it can be when you’re new to a workshop environment, so creating a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere is important to me.
Our classes are kept small, with two tutors throughout the day, so there’s plenty of time for questions and one-to-one help. You don’t need any previous experience - just come along and give it a go!
