Prepare and Cut Fabrics
You’ll begin by planning out your pattern and cutting your fabric. I’ll show you how to measure and mark your pieces accurately, plan the pattern placement correctly, and cut clean, even edges. This step sets you up for a beautiful cushion with a neat, professional finish.
Adding the Zip
Zips can feel intimidating, but I’ll break the process down into easy steps. You’ll learn how to position and pin your zip, stitch it neatly, and finish the opening so it looks clean and professional. Once you’ve done it once, you’ll wonder why you ever worried about it.
Make and Add Your Own Piping
Learn how to create and attach your own piping for a truly professional‑quality cushion. I’ll show you how to cut your bias strips, cover the cord neatly, and sew the piping into your cushion so it sits smooth and even around the edges. This is a hugely useful technique — once you’ve mastered it, you can use piping to elevate cushions, bags, and even garment sewing.
Remember to Have Fun Along the Way
Sewing should feel enjoyable, relaxed and creative — and that’s exactly the atmosphere in this workshop. There’s plenty of time to chat, laugh and enjoy the process as you learn. Many students arrive feeling a little nervous, but quickly settle in and realise how satisfying and fun sewing can be. Whether you’re concentrating at the machine or celebrating your finished cushion, you’ll be surrounded by encouragement and a friendly studio vibe. After all, learning a new skill is always better when you’re having a good time.
Take Home and Enjoy Your Gorgeous New Cushion
Once your cushion is fully assembled, piped and pressed, you’ll get to admire the beautiful result of your day’s creativity. With its neat zip closure and professional finish, it’s the kind of cushion you’ll be proud to display at home — whether on the sofa, a favourite chair or your bed. Students often say this is their favourite moment of the workshop: holding something stylish, useful and completely handmade. It’s a lovely reminder of what you can achieve with the right skills and a relaxed, enjoyable day of sewing.
