Prepare and cut fabrics

Prepare and Cut Fabrics

You’ll begin by planning out your pattern and cutting your fabric. I’ll show you how to measure and mark your pieces accurately, plan the pattern placement correctly, and cut clean, even edges. This step sets you up for a beautiful cushion with a neat, professional finish.

Adding the zip

Adding the Zip

Zips can feel intimidating, but I’ll break the process down into easy steps. You’ll learn how to position and pin your zip, stitch it neatly, and finish the opening so it looks clean and professional. Once you’ve done it once, you’ll wonder why you ever worried about it.

Make and add your own piping

Make and Add Your Own Piping

Learn how to create and attach your own piping for a truly professional‑quality cushion. I’ll show you how to cut your bias strips, cover the cord neatly, and sew the piping into your cushion so it sits smooth and even around the edges. This is a hugely useful technique — once you’ve mastered it, you can use piping to elevate cushions, bags, and even garment sewing.

Remember to have fun along the way!

female Women-owned

I’m Jen, a textile artist and award‑winning sewing educator, and sewing has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. I started hand‑sewing at the age of four and was confidently using a sewing machine by seven. That early spark never faded — fabric, thread and creativity have been lifelong companions, and they eventually led me to build a career in textiles and, later, to open my own studio, Artisan Stitch, here in Edinburgh.
Before founding Artisan Stitch, I worked in high‑end knitwear and spent many years immersed in the craft and design world. But teaching is where I truly found my purpose. I love helping people discover what they can create with their own hands, and I’m passionate about making sewing accessible, enjoyable and confidence‑building for everyone. There’s nothing better than seeing a student’s face light up when a technique finally clicks or they finish a project they never thought they could make.
Over the years I’ve taught thousands of students — from complete beginners to experienced sewists — and I’ve been honoured to receive multiple national awards recognising the quality of my teaching and workshops. I’ve also been featured in local newspapers and invited to teach in schools, which has been a wonderful way to share sewing with the next generation.
My classes are friendly, relaxed and supportive, with lots of individual guidance. I believe creativity should feel joyful, not intimidating, and I love watching students leave with new skills, new confidence and something beautiful they’ve made themselves.
When I’m not teaching, you’ll find me in my studio experimenting with textiles, developing new workshops or happily stitching away with a cup of tea. I’d love to welcome you to a class and help you discover the pleasure of making something with your own hands.
