3 hours Class size 1 to 8 guests       £50 (PayPal Pay in 3 available)

Join bestselling author and certified book coach Emma Dhesi for a new series of beginner-friendly memoir writing workshops at The Arienas Collective in Edinburgh City Centre.
Whether you're reflecting on your own life or capturing someone else's story, these workshops will show you how to turn your most treasured memories into rich, immersive stories – ones you might keep just for family, or one day share with the world.
The series is split into three key areas, and you're welcome to join whichever sessions suit you and wherever you're at with your storytelling – there's no need to attend in a set order.
  • What your memoir is really about – uncover what sets a memoir apart from an autobiography, find your central theme and your narrative lens (the particular slice of life your story will focus on), and craft your own story summary (17 November and 3 December)
  • How to plan your memoir – draw on personal memories and objects for inspiration as you learn the four basics of dialogue, how to structure a memory into a story, how to write scenes that bring real truth to life, and how to develop your own writing voice and point of view (23 September, 18 November and 4 December)
  • How to share your memoir with others – explore ways to store and share your stories with family and friends, weigh up traditional publishing against self-publishing, get a feel for the editing and submission process, and land on a realistic next step (8 September and 19 November)
However many sessions you join, you'll leave with the confidence, structure and tools to keep shaping your story long after the workshop ends – a keepsake in progress that's entirely your own.
What you'll get
  • Paper and pens are provided.
  • Light refreshments, including locally-sourced, award-winning Shibui teas and Mr Eion coffee, are available.
  • Notes will be emailed to you after the workshops.
Knowledge required
No previous knowledge or skills are required. The workshop is beginner-friendly and will also suit those wanting to develop their written storytelling skills.
What to bring
You don’t need to bring anything—just your ideas. However, if you have specific memories or objects you’d like to write about, please bring those along for inspiration. You are also welcome to bring your own notebook and any writing you’ve begun.

The Arienas Collective creative workshop hub is located in a beautiful, Georgian mews home in Edinburgh's historic New Town.
The Collective was set up to help local artists and makers earn a living through sharing their creative skills and passions with others. Our name emanates from Loch Arienas: a remote and reflective spot in the Scottish Highlands much loved by founder Lynn Powell.
Discover our space by booking a workshop, or popping along to our Open Day - the only day we open to the public.
