Nestled in an old, red brick mill on the banks of the Irwell river is the aptly named Paradise Works, a labyrinth of creative studios on the edge of the city centre is where you''ll find Nick whittling a spoon, turning a bowl or building a piece of furniture. Far away from the typical woodland setting of many green woodworking workshops, Studio Critical: is definitely an urban studio. We believe that you don't need to be in a woodland in order to be making beautiful and useful objects from wood, in fact most of our wood comes from storm fallen trees in the city. You'll often see Nick with a load of logs on the back of his cargo bike, whizzing down Deansgate on the way to the studio. So come by and learn a thing or two about how wood works!
Studio Critical: is a Manchester based studio creating tactile wooden objects. Designer/Maker Nick Vorstermans focuses his practice on using locally and sustainably sourced materials. His wooden spoons, bowls, furniture & other objects are handmade -- many of them from green wood salvaged from urban trees that fell naturally or were trimmed. Come and learn how to use simple hand tools to create your very own usable objects and take away not only what you've made, but the experience that comes with making it.
