From January 2027 I’m relocating my studio/workshop to Roslin (30 mins by bus to the south of Edinburgh) a few metres from the famed Rosslyn Chapel and Castle
(a wonderful opportunity to combine a workshop with a visit to the chapel afterwards. A discount voucher will be available)
I hope to see you there
More details will follow
Thank you for your support
Can’t see a date that suits? Request your own that does.. (If you can drag along a friend, then your welcome to request a ‘private’ lesson otherwise it may be open to others) thank you. Will
** I’m very flexible on dates, so you’re most welcome to book a “class”. as long as the desired date doesn’t clash with other existing bookings (please give a few alternatives if possible)
Design and make your very own A5 or larger A4 copper panel.
In this class, you will learn the practical skills needed to create a decorative panel, personalised to your own design which when displayed under double mount boards, will be ready to frame and be admired on your wall.
Please start thinking/choosing a design as soon as possible which I can help prepare for the class beforehand.
You'll be guided through the processes of embossing and chasing back the soft metal which after chemically ageing will be highlighted and polished.
Don't worry if you're a beginner - this workshop is designed for those with a desire to create for themselves. You'll learn how to handle various materials, tools, and adhesives.
The atmosphere in the studio will be warm and welcoming, with plenty of snacks teas/ coffee
By the end of the workshop, you'll have not only gained new skills and confidence but also have your own unique wall art to take home.
What is Repoussé?
Repoussé is a generalised term for ancient metalworking techniques in which soft, malleable metals are shaped by localised pressure to create a design in relief.
Many metals can be used including gold, silver and copper as well as alloys such as bronze and pewter.
These techniques have been extensively used all over the world, as they require only the simplest tools and materials, and yet allow great diversity of expression. They are also relatively economical, since there is no loss or waste of metal. Toolmarks are often intentionally left visible to show the artist's hand.
A few among many famous examples of repoussé and chasing are the prehistoric Gundestrup cauldron, the death mask of Tutankhamen, Bronze Age armour and even the Statue of Liberty in New York and Paris.
Here in Scotland, the art form reached its peak during the Arts and Crafts movement, a reaction to the machined mass-produced. Hopefully together we can create a revival of sorts.

  • 5/5 from Jane Ross, attended Jun 2026: What a fantastic afternoon! We learned so much, Will was amazing at guiding us through the day and not making it feel like a classroom. His passion shines and makes the whole experience one for the books.
  • 5/5 from Gary Page, attended Feb 2026: Great day with Will. Guided us through the stages of making the panel. Results were great
  • 5/5 from Lynda Dobinson, attended Feb 2026: Intrigued by this beautiful art form, we booked a repoussé class and used a gift voucher we’d received for Christmas to put towards it. The whole process was incredibly straightforward — I already knew that the vouchers were easy to buy but as a recipient they're just as easy to redeem. Within a couple of hours of booking, Will got in touch with helpful advice and guidance, which immediately set a positive tone. On the day itself, he was welcoming, friendly, and full of advice and encouragement. His passion for his work shines through and his enthusiasm and friendly chat made the experience even more enjoyable. We both came away feeling inspired, supported, and genuinely delighted with what we created. A wonderful experience from start to finish. I wouldn't be surprised to see us back to do another workshop in the future!
  • 5/5 from Joren Stroobants, attended Feb 2026: The teacher was very kind, social, helpfull. He gave us a lott of tips about what we should do and not in Edinburgh. During the workshop he helped and explained everything that we needed to do and the different techniques that can be used with different images. He provided different Scottish snacks which were adapted to different diets. We would recommend the copper repousse class 100 %.
  • 5/5 from Elizabeth Anne Sandison, attended Jan 2026: A very enjoyable and relaxed class. Will, our teacher, explained each step of the process clearly and supported us through it. I am very pleased with my copper plaque and would certainly recommend this class.
  • 5/5 from Julia Golosova, attended Jan 2026: A day well spent! Will is very knowledgeable about all things copper, was very helpful while not overtaking the work too much so that i still get a really nice picture that’s done and chose by myself. The atmosphere is cosy and friendly, highly recommend

Hello I’m Will Phoenix and I've always been slightly obsessed with books... thou not the reading type, but the empty ones...the dusty old journal, them marbled edged Victorian ledgers, the ageing leather notebook or the beautiful sketch pad. A constant sketcher, i still carry around a pencil and pad, happily losing myself drawing (instead of finger tapping a smart phone).
As bookmaker (I don't call myself a binder) I recently fell heavily for leather work, a new apprenticeship almost. After spending substantially more than the much talked about "10, 000 hours" on embossing (repoussé) soft metals, I felt it time for a fresh challenge. I started at the basement level and repeated what i did 24 years ago when I picked up my first sheet of metal to shape into a book cover
I presented my work for sale since the beginning and in this world of the cheap/mass produced, I've realised there is still a small place for the individual, the actual unique 'one of a kind' piece. I carry no airs and graces and never over-precious about my work. I simply makes books. I’m looking forward to teaching., Kindest Regards
Will
