Scottish Mezze Cooking Workshop

Local ingredients, Mediterranean style

2.5 hours Class size 6 to 16 guests       £85

Take your tastebuds on a journey where Scotland meets the Mediterranean in this vibrant, hands-on cookery class. Inspired by the generous tradition of mezze—colourful small plates designed for sharing—you’ll create a relaxed, flavour-packed spread that’s perfect for entertaining or elevating everyday meals.
You’ll transform local vegetables, fish and dairy into a modern mezze feast full of bold flavours, fresh herbs and contrasting textures.
On the menu, you’ll make dishes such as:
  • Beetroot hummus with toasted oat dukkah
  • Smoked mackerel pâté with lemon and horseradish
  • Seared steak with gremolata & crispy onions
  • Roasted carrots with yoghurt and pickled chilli
  • Barley tabbouleh with garden herbs and greens
  • Fresh, homemade ricotta
Along the way, you’ll build confidence in balancing flavours, using spices and citrus to lift dishes, layering textures, and plating food beautifully for sharing.
This class is perfect for curious home cooks who want to bring more creativity and seasonality into their kitchen. Come hungry, cook together, and leave with a collection of flexible recipes that celebrate Scotland’s produce through a Mediterranean lens.

  • 4/5 from Annabel Kerr, attended Jul 2026: Very relaxed, friendly class. And delicious to eat all our dishes at the end!
  • 5/5 from Victoria Ayre, attended Apr 2026: What a knowledgeable chef. He was fantastic. He readily conveyed his love of food and cooking and taught us much more than was advertised. The class was definitely undersold! It advertised learning 4 or 5 dishes but we made at least 10 and covered many techniques and idea. It was all delicious. What a great day. I loved it. Thanks so much.
  • 5/5 from Irene Whalen, attended Mar 2026: Really enjoyed the experience and was amazed at how many dishes were created. Would definitely recommend.
  • 4/5 from Robert Brand, attended Mar 2026: This was the first time using this work shop. The idea is great, the chef was very polite and very informative. When I looked at the online work shops, I was thinking with the name scottish mezze that it would have more scottish influences. But it was mostly Mediterranean, but it was nice surprise learning about other dishes to cook.. I would have liked the description of the work shop to be a little more clearer. I would definitely recommend this class to anyone who wants to expand their knowledge in this type of cooking
  • 5/5 from David Isaacs, attended Jan 2026: Carlos was absolutely fabulous and his assistant Rosie was too. Wide variety of food. I particularly loved the falafel; possibly the best I’ve ever tasted. Throughly enjoyed the class and planning to do more classes soon. Well worth the money.
  • 5/5 from Gillian Minshull, attended Oct 2025: This was a birthday gift from family, went with my daughters and what a great experience! Show lots of tips and great recipes - crackers, cottage cheese, tabuleh, steak, best salsa verde and bread rolls and more. Good set up and nice to meet other people. Chef really knew his stuff.
  • 5/5 from Patricia Baillie Strong, attended Oct 2025: Chef Carlo started by telling us a little bit about the aims of Edinburgh Food Social. There were eight of us in the workshop including a young girl and a vegetarian. He happily catered for everyone, making a large amount of dishes with everyone involved in the preparation. He gave us plenty of tips and nothing at all was wasted, even baking tomato skins to make into tomato powder for decorating dishes. We finished off by eating the fruits of our labours, delicious!

Edinburgh Food Socials is where great food, great people, and community come together.
We run relaxed, hands-on cooking classes led by experienced, friendly chefs who love sharing their skills in a down-to-earth, welcoming way. Whether you’re a total beginner or a confident home cook, you’ll feel supported, inspired, and well-fed.
We’re not a cookery school that takes itself too seriously — we’re a social food project built around creating confidence in the kitchen and fostering a love of food. Our classes are designed to bring people together around the table: cooking, chatting, tasting, and enjoying the experience. Come solo, bring friends, or make it a date — everyone’s welcome.
At the heart of Edinburgh Food Socials is our belief that good food should be for everyone. We want to make sure that everyone not only has access to Scotland's great produce but, crucially, knows what to do with it. That’s why we're a social enterprise and we always keep two free spaces in every class for people from our Craigmillar community who might not otherwise be able to afford to attend. When you book a class with us, you’re not just learning to cook — you’re helping make our sessions more inclusive and community-led.
We have received multiple awards, most recently for Responsible Business of the Year, Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce Business Awards 2025.
Book a class, cook with us, and discover just how delicious and fun food can be.
Are you looking for a fun new team-building event, a hen party or a birthday party? We would love to host you in our kitchen for a private class. If there are at least 4 of you, then you can request a date for a class, and when possible, we will host a class on this date and time, but it will be opened up for other people to book onto. We need at least 6 people for the class to be fully private
