10 Projects to Try at Macrame Classes in London

10 Projects to Try at Macrame Classes in London

By ClassBento Team

Macrame classes in London have gained popularity over the last few years, thanks to many projects shared on the popular photo-sharing platform Pinterest. However, the art of macrame itself certainly isn’t new – macrame has been around for centuries!

Popularised in the modern world in the 1970s, macrame utilizes various knotting techniques to form a textile. The knots used to create macrame are known as ‘hitching,’ and when combined, can form various practical tools and ornaments such as table cloths and wall hangings.

Macrame can vary in difficulty from easy to more complex projects. If you’ve been thinking about getting into macrame or improving your skills, why not attend a macrame class in London? We’ve put together a list of ten projects you can try at home, or at one of our London macrame classes. Get inspired below.

1. Macrame plant hanger for beginners

A plant hanger is great for beginners due to its straightforward design. With just a few simple knots, you can create a macrame plant hanger for any sized plant in your home or garden. Add a pop of colour by using a bright coloured cord, or combine patterns to create a multi-level plant hanger.

2. Decorative macrame wall hanging

One of the most popular Pinterest projects, a wall hanging can be as simple or as complex as you want to make it. Mix and match hitching styles to create different patterns and designs to suit your home. The great thing about macrame wall hangings is that they’re versatile, and can suit almost any home’s theme. Use it to soften a modern, urban environment, or complement a boho theme.

3. Entertain with a macrame table runner

Shh, here’s a secret - you can convert your wall hanging to a table runner, or simply create a new one. Utilizing the same techniques as the wall hanging, you can add a little bit of flair to your dining table by crafting your very own table runner. If you need birthday party ideas for entertaining at home, don’t look past a little bit of macrame to impress your guests – they may even jump onto the macrame bandwagon, too!

4. Step out in style with a macrame bag

This is one of those things that sounds difficult, but it really isn’t. Thanks to the larger knots used to make a macrame bag, it’s actually a great beginners’ project. The general rule is that the larger the knots, the less you have to make – easy, right? You can’t just stop at one bag though. You’ll need a bag for work, a bag for going out, one for your best friend and one spare.

5. DIY macrame jewellery

You can let your imagination run wild with this one – the options are virtually endless! Making your own macrame jewellery is a great way to get the hang of things on a small scale while creating a unique piece to wear. Think earrings, necklaces, and bracelets.

Mix and match different materials such as wood or plastic, or add charms to your piece to suit your style. Macrame jewellery makes thoughtful yet inexpensive gifts, too, and depending on the complexity of your project, you can whip one up in a short period of time – great for those last-minute presents!

6. Get organized with a macrame case

This is another super easy one that can be applied to almost anything. Using similar techniques from the plant hanger and the bag, you can create a case to go around your phone, camera or hand sanitiser bottle. Keep all your essentials handy while looking stylish at the same time.

7. Make a handy macrame hand strap

Handy for when you’re always on the go, a hand strap can keep everything you need nearby. Using a special knotting technique, you can make straps for your mobile phone, sunglasses or handbag. Thick, refined knots mean that your belongings are secure, and you can customize the strap to your desired length or colour.

8. Accessorise with macrame

The great thing about the art of macrame is that once you’ve got a few hitches and knots down, you can apply the same techniques to make almost anything. There’s no reason you can’t incorporate a little macrame into your wardrobe, either. A macrame belt is a stylish addition to any outfit, or try a macrame headband for a picnic in the park.

For the more adventurous, you can even create your own clothing using macrame techniques – a cute scarf or crop top can be matched with a range of outfits to suit any occasion.

9. Rug up with a macrame blanket

This one’s a bit of a larger project that may take a little bit of practice (and patience!) to get right, but it’s certainly worth it. Create your own blanket for your bed, couch, or even your pet by using macrame techniques.

A macrame blanket is the perfect addition to your garden or outdoor cinema space and is great for both the warmer and cooler months. Did we mention they look good, too? Or, use your blanket as a picnic rug for those Instagram-worthy shots.

10. Macrame chair or hammock

Okay, there are no guarantees that you’ll be making this in your first macrame class (or even fiftieth), but we’ve included this to give you an idea of just how versatile the art of macrame can be. By using reinforcing techniques and strong cords, you can create your own hanging chair or deck hammock. Not ready for that just yet? Upcycle an old chair frame by dressing it up with a macrame. If the thought of a macrame chair is a bit much for you, then grab any old chair, have a seat, and get started on a small macrame project instead...we guarantee you’ll be hooked!
