Over three delicious hours, the experienced chef team will guide you through the wonderful world of sauces. You’ll learn how to craft everything from silky classics to bold, modern blends in this inspiring workshop, all while using fresh, seasonal, and sustainable ingredients.
In this hands-on activity, you'll learn to:
  • Whip up a velvety béchamel and discover how to transform it into a healthier, more flavourful macaroni and cheese using roasted root vegetables (yes, really!).
  • Create a rich and nourishing tomato sauce from scratch that's so satisfying, you’ll be inspired to skip the shop-bought versions.
  • Explore the creation of vibrant green sauces – perfect for adding a burst of freshness and colour to many dishes.
  • Master the art of balancing sweet, salty, sour, and sharp flavours by making a range of homemade salad dressings that will elevate any salad, meaning you'll be happy to leave the bottled varieties on the shelf.
The class will also cover the principles of layering flavours, how to balance acidity perfectly, and the secrets to using sauces to either harmonise a dish or make them the standout star. We’re not a cookery school that takes itself too seriously — we’re a social food project built around creating confidence in the kitchen and fostering a love of food. Our classes are designed to bring people together around the table: cooking, chatting, tasting, and enjoying the experience. Come solo, bring friends, or make it a date — everyone’s welcome.
At the heart of Edinburgh Food Socials is our belief that good food should be for everyone. We want to make sure that everyone not only has access to Scotland's great produce but, crucially, knows what to do with it. That’s why we're a social enterprise and we always keep two free spaces in every class for people from our Craigmillar community who might not otherwise be able to afford to attend. When you book a class with us, you’re not just learning to cook — you’re helping make our sessions more inclusive and community-led.

Are you looking for a fun new team-building event, a hen party or a birthday party? We would love to host you in our kitchen for a private class. If there are at least 4 of you, then you can request a date for a class, and when possible, we will host a class on this date and time, but it will be opened up for other people to book onto. We need at least 6 people for the class to be fully private
