Really nice pottery painting session at Cernamic with a lovely lady who accommodated well for 12 people, offering us a range of different mugs, plates, bowls and ceramic characters. This workshop was amazing. Really fantastic resources and tile collection. The most hospitable tutor, John, very knowledgeable and helpful, super experienced in art, design and textiles, walked us through the whole process of designing, drawing and painting our designs onto our tiles. The studio is an oasis of creative calm; spacious, comfortable, only 5 mins walk from the tube. Refreshments are included. Highly recommended for a solo, couple or group evening activity! We had such a great time at one of the Taylor Swift themed classes! It had a fun but chilled atmosphere and of course the tunes were excellent. The teacher gave clear instructions and was around to help, but mostly let us get on with things which was the perfect balance. I would definitely go again! Textural magic: Exploring sgraffito pottery
If you’re keen to dive into a more advanced and textural technique in your ceramic painting journey, then sgraffito pottery is calling your name! This fascinating method involves applying a layer of coloured slip (liquid clay) to your ceramic piece, letting it dry, and then carefully scratching through it to reveal the contrasting clay beneath. The word "sgraffito" actually means "to scratch" in Italian, and the results are stunning; creating intricate lines, patterns, and designs with beautiful depth. It's a super cool artistic way to add an extra dimension to your projects, allowing for incredibly detailed and elegant finishes.
Why you'll be hooked
It’s always fun to try something completely new! You'll get completely absorbed in the artistic challenge, creating gorgeous textures and intricate, elegant designs that really pop.
Fire and fortune: The thrills of Raku firing
For those who love a bit of drama and originality in their pottery, exploring Raku firing is an exhilarating experience that takes clay painting to a whole new level! Raku is a traditional Japanese firing technique where pots are removed from the kiln while still glowing hot and then immediately placed into a chamber with combustible materials like sawdust or leaves. The sudden temperature change and the smoke create unique, iridescent glazes, crackle effects, and blackened areas. The results are spontaneous, often metallic, and always stunningly individual – no two pieces are ever truly alike!
Why you'll be hooked
The thrill of the unpredictable and the magic of witnessing dramatic colour shifts as your piece emerges from the Raku kiln will leave you amazed. Plus, you’ll end the session holding a truly one-of-a-kind, breathtaking work of art!
The crafter’s verdict…
What a fantastic session today. I came away with three wonderful pots having practised several different Raku methods. We were very well informed about the subject and had examples of pots to look at before designing our own. Thank you. Helen Williams, Raku firing pottery workshop, Liverpool

Ceramic Painting FAQs
Still got some burning questions about diving into the colourful world of ceramic painting? You're in the right place! We've got all the answers to help you get ready for a brilliant, creative time.
Do I need to be artistic or have any experience?
Absolutely not! That's the beauty of it. Our pottery painting workshops are designed for complete beginners and seasoned creatives alike, and our friendly instructors are there to guide you, offer tips, and help you feel totally comfortable. It's about having fun and expressing yourself, not creating a gallery-worthy piece (unless you do – then high five!).
What kind of items can I paint?
The sky's the limit! You'll usually find a huge selection of ceramics to paint, including mugs, plates, bowls, platters, vases, trinket boxes, animal figurines, seasonal decorations, and even special items for kids. There's truly something for everyone to personalise!
Is the paint safe to use, and will my item be food-safe afterwards?
In most instances, yes! The paints (glazes) used in a lot of our studios are non-toxic and specially designed for ceramics – but always check with the teacher just to be sure. Once your piece is fired in the kiln, the glaze becomes a durable, food-safe, and often dishwasher-safe finish. So yes, you can definitely drink your tea from that fabulous mug you painted!
How long does a pottery painting session usually last?
Most paint your own pottery sessions typically last between 1.5 to 2.5 hours, depending on the complexity of your chosen piece and how much detail you want to add. Some workshops, especially those with specific techniques like sgraffito, might be a bit longer.
When will my masterpiece be ready to collect?
Good question! After you finish painting, your piece needs to be glazed and fired in a hot kiln: this process takes time, so you usually can't take your item home on the same day. Most studios will have your finished piece ready for collection within 7-14 days, and they'll let you know the exact timeframe and when to pop back to pick up your treasure!
Can I bring my own drinks or snacks?
Many studios offer BYOB pottery painting sessions, letting you bring your favourite tipple or snacks to enjoy while you get creative. Always check with the specific studio when booking, as policies can vary. Some even have cafes or restaurants on-site!
Is pottery painting suitable for groups or special occasions?
It's absolutely perfect! Ceramic painting is a fantastic idea for birthdays, hen parties, team-building events, family outings, or just a fun get-together with friends. It's a relaxed, interactive activity that encourages conversation and shared laughter, and everyone gets a unique souvenir at the end.
What should I wear?
We recommend wearing comfortable clothes that you don't mind getting a tiny bit of paint on – just in case! While glazes usually wash out, it's always best to play it safe. Aprons are usually provided too.
