In this story:
Hey craft lover! My name’s Vicky, and as a part of the editorial team here at ClassBento, I've been scouring our range of fun things to do in Manchester this week – and let me tell you, the city is absolutely brimming with amazing experiences! From cool flower and plant classes that will help you give Monty Don a run for his money to heavenly scented bath and body workshops that will channel your inner bohemian, we’ve got something to please everyone. So, whether you've been scratching your head for fun activities in Manchester or just fancy levelling up your weekend, you've landed in the right place. Consider this your personal guide to some of the gems that have really caught my eye (and I reckon will catch yours too!).
A Japanese Shimenawa workshop
First up on my list of must-try fun activities in Manchester is the Japanese Shimenawa Workshop. I find the whole concept of Shimenawa so fascinating – these beautifully twisted straw ropes that hold such cultural significance in Japan, marking sacred spaces and bringing prosperity. The workshop itself is a real journey into a traditional craft; you’re guided by an expert through the process of selecting and preparing the straw, learning the specific techniques for twisting and shaping it into these intricate designs and then adding a floral flourish at the end. It's not just about following instructions; it's about connecting with a centuries-old art form and creating something with intention and care.
Why I'd rate it… and you will too:
Honestly, if you're after stuff to do in Manchester that’s a proper departure from the norm, this is it. It’s not just another afternoon out; it’s an opportunity to learn a skill that’s steeped in history and culture. Plus, the finished piece isn't just a decoration; it's something you've created with your own hands, filled with a sense of tradition and calm. It’s a truly unique Manchester activity that offers both a creative outlet and a cultural insight. A winner!

A scent creation and candle making workshop
Next on my list of fun activities in Manchester that I’m earmarking for myself has to be the scent creation and candle making workshop from Cedar Lifestyle. I’m really into all things organic and natural, so the chance to learn how to craft sustainable scents – yes please!
The workshop guides you through the fascinating world of essential oils and fragrance notes, allowing you to experiment and blend until you discover your very own signature scent. Led by the wonderfully talented Lizzy, you’ll spend an afternoon combining different aromas to create something that perfectly reflects your personality or evokes a special memory – and then you’ll get to take it home to fill your space with scent! Plus, Form Lifestyle, the venue for this workshop is like a bohemian paradise – plants, exposed brickwork and gorgeous homewares? Count me in!
A very enjoyable session. Lovely and relaxed, and I liked that there were only 8 people in the class, as it felt more personal.
It was great experimenting with the different scents, and the instructor shared lots of information both for during the session and for anyone wanting to continue with candle making at home. I would definitely recommend this workshop, I bought it as a gift for a friend but it was certainly a class you could attend by yourself! Lorraine Kelly, ClassBento crafter
Why I'd rate it... and you will too:
If you’re looking for Manchester activities that’ll engage your senses and leave you with a treat for your mind and body, this is a real gem. I’m drawn to the idea of that personal connection you’d have with a scent you’ve designed yourself, and let’s be honest, a gorgeous, handmade candle is going to level up bathtime like nothing else!

A fabric dyeing with natural dyes workshop
For those of you with a passion for all things sustainable (like me, as the resident ClassBento eco-warrior!), this natural fabric dyeing workshop is an absolute must-try – and it’s definitely one of the more unique fun activities in Manchester that’s caught my eye. The workshop unveils the fascinating process of drawing colour from the natural world – think flowers, roots, and leaves – and then applying those delicious buttery yellow tones to fabric. You’ll learn all about the history and science behind natural dyeing, and then get hands-on to create your own naturally dyed textiles – ready to make into a brand new tote bag, cushion cover or scarf. Satisfying, sustainable and creative – what’s not to love?
Why I'd rate it… and you will too:
If you’re after stuff to do in Manchester that’s both artistic and mindful of the planet, this is a fantastic choice. I love the idea of learning a traditional craft that’s also sustainable (covering my two great loves!), and the thought of taking home a piece of fabric coloured with your own natural dyes – a wearable piece of art or a unique home textile – is incredibly appealing.

A colourful pasta making workshop
Shout out to my fellow pasta lovers! Get ready for a truly joyful and hands-on experience with this colourful pasta making workshop – if there was going to be a foodie Manchester activity on my list, it was definitely going to be Italian. Forget your standard, pale pasta – in this class, you’ll learn the delightful art of infusing fresh pasta dough with vibrant colours derived from natural food dyes, before kneading it into wonderful shapes. It’s a wonderfully tactile process, from kneading the dough to shaping it into various forms, all while creating a visual feast before it even hits the plate. Plus, the end of the workshop features a fabulous feast paired with a delicious glass of wine – I’ll drink to that!
Why I'd rate it… and you will too:
If you’re after fun activities in Manchester that are guaranteed to bring a smile to your face and result in a truly satisfying (and delicious!) outcome, this is a winner. From the playful nature of creating colourful pasta to the taste of fresh, homemade food, there’s lots to love about this workshop. It’s a fantastic Manchester activity that’s perfect for anyone who loves to cook, eat, and have a good laugh while doing it!
Thank you so much for this session, Jinny was fabulous and it was such a great day learning how to make pasta! It was brilliant enjoying the food with the class at the end and I’m sure I will be back for more classes with Jinny! Julia Domanska, ClassBento crafter

An urban wild food foraging class
My last pick of the week is another one for all my fellow eco-lovers and nature fans – an urban foraging class in nearby Liverpool that will show you the city landscape in a new and fascinating light. I’ve always wanted to learn more about edible (and non-edible!) plants, and this isn't just a walk in the park; it's an opportunity to unlock a hidden world of treasures that often grow right under our noses. Guided by an expert, you'll learn to identify a variety of wild plants and herbs that are safe and delicious to eat, while hearing about their medicinal, herbal and folklore elements – it’s a mini adventure in your own city!
Why I'd rate it… and you will too:
If you’re looking for stuff to do in Manchester that’s a bit more adventurous and offers a unique perspective on your surroundings, this is a brilliant choice – plus, what better way to spend your weekend than surrounded by nature? It’s my idea of heaven! The knowledge you’ll gain in this class is really eye-opening, and the ability to identify edible plants will transform your everyday environment into a potential source of food. If you’re looking to engage with nature and spend less time in the supermarket, this is one for you!
