Learn how to lead and unload film and how to use any of your film cameras. The workshop will entail a photo walk so that people can get more comfortable with the techniques they have learnt. Point and shoots are welcome as there will be some tips for them, but the focus will be on getting the most out of your manual film cameras.
Depends where you look and who you speak to, but people say that film is dying, but it might be because you just can’t get the use out of it. This workshop will walk you through how to get the best out of your film camera. There will be a focus on manual film cameras, but there are also some tips and tricks for point and shoots.
We will start with the loading of film (a 35mm film will be included on a ticket, if you bring 120mm please message us at least 3 days before the workshop). After that, we will get comfortable with the feel of the camera and how it feels in hand. There are certain buttons and features that differ from camera to camera, and some things we just will want to use for ease but also with speed so the street photographers among you don’t miss those moments you’re desperate to capture.
Once we have done that, we will go on a walk around the Quays to see how these things work in practise. This is also a great opportunity to use these cameras in varying light and start to understand some of the theory behind photography, film, and why the cameras have the features they have. This is the best way to learn about your camera and your personal style as you’ll understand why you do what you do, not just how to do it. There are also features on different cameras like light metres in viewfinders that will only work in varying conditions, so the photo walk will help us make the best out of the camera too.
After that, we will return to the bookshop and learn how to unload film. This isn’t a necessity as you might want to save the film for a certain occasion. However, we will discuss some tricks on how to unload film without making silly mistakes I have made along the way.
By the end of the workshop, I hope that people will be able to use their camera and be much more comfortable with it. It should also lead to a love for film and therefore experimenting with different types of film and going out with the sole purpose being to take photos on film. If there is enough interest, we can then go for more photo walks.
