Children's Drawing Class

Most children's art classes are run by teachers. This one is run by working artists.Ash Lab is a studio first — we exhibit, we sell work, and we prepare older students for art school portfolios. The children's class comes out of the same practice, which means your child is taught the way artists actually learn to see: by looking hard at something real, and drawing it.That doesn't make it serious or joyless. Five-year-olds draw animals and invent characters. Twelve-year-olds tackle perspective and shadow. Everyone is working on their own thing at their own pace — we don't run one lesson at the whole room.Over a term, children work through:

• Drawing from observation — the single skill everything else rests on
• Animals and the natural world
• Characters, and telling a story in pictures
• Perspective and composition
• Light, shadow and texture
• Pencil, coloured pencil and mixed media
• Their own projects, taken further than they expect

Classes are capped at eight, so every child gets individual feedback in every session — not a demonstration at the front of the room.For older students, this feeds directly into our Foundation and portfolio preparation work. Several of our students have gone on to art school. But nobody has to be heading anywhere in particular; most are here because they like drawing and want to get better at it.No experience needed. Beginners very welcome. Finished work to take home from every session, and a folder that visibly changes over a term. We keep everything, so you can see the progression laid out at the end.
