Join this exciting 6-week Character Design course and learn how to create compelling, visually consistent characters for your stories, games, or animations – blending drawing skills with narrative and design thinking. This workshop, spread over 12 hours (one 2-hour class per week), is designed to guide you from initial ideas to a fully realised character concept.
Weekly Breakdown:
Week 1: Introduction to Character Design
  • What makes a strong character design? Shape, silhouette, story
  • Drawing warm-ups & shape-based design techniques
  • Sketching simple character thumbnails with different body types and gestures
Week 2: Anatomy, Proportion & Style
  • Review of basic anatomy for stylised or realistic characters
  • Character building blocks: head, torso, limbs, hands
  • Students choose a character idea and begin building base sketches
Week 3: Costumes, Props & Personality
  • Explore how clothing, gear, and accessories reflect character traits
  • Mood boards and reference gathering (historical, fantasy, sci-fi, etc.)
  • Students design outfit variations and start refining their main character
Week 4: Expression & Pose Sheets
  • Facial expressions and body language: showing emotion and attitude
  • Drawing multiple expressions and action poses
  • Optional: design alternate angles or head turns
Week 5: Colour, Texture & Final Rendering
  • Basics of colour theory in character design
  • How to use colour and texture to enhance mood, status, and setting
  • Begin finalising the character with line art and/or colour rendering
Week 6: Final Concept Sheet & Presentation
Assemble a professional-style character concept sheet
(Includes: front view, expressions, colour version, and key props)
  • Group presentation and constructive feedback
  • Discussion of portfolios, next steps, and creative careers

  • Reference images or mood board creation tools/ drawing tablet & laptop
