Prepare for your GCSE Art exams with this comprehensive 6-Week Exam Preparation Course, an engaging activity designed for students aged 14–16 (Years 10–11). This supportive workshop, available in-person or as online group sessions, is structured to help you improve your skills and feel ready for your assessment.
In this course, you will learn how to:
  • Strengthen your coursework portfolio and sketchbook presentation.
  • Refine your technical and observational drawing skills.
  • Improve your annotation and use of artist references.
  • Develop your ESA themes and final piece plans with expert guidance.
  • Practise effective time management and exam planning strategies.
Over six weeks, with two focused 2-hour sessions each week (equating to 24 contact hours in total), you'll benefit from small group sizes of a maximum of 6–8 students, ensuring plenty of individual attention. Wednesday after school sessions (4:30pm – 6:30pm) concentrate on practical skills and sketchbook work. Saturday morning sessions (10:00am – 12:00pm) are dedicated to portfolio development, one-to-one feedback, artist research, and final piece planning.
Each week of this learning activity builds on the last, guiding you systematically through key areas:
  • Week 1: Portfolio and sketchbook review, plus setting clear goals for your progress.
  • Week 2: Observational drawing practice and learning how to annotate your work effectively.
  • Week 3: Exploring diverse media, new techniques, and understanding composition.
  • Week 4: Working from the Externally Set Assignment (ESA) and brainstorming personal responses.
  • Week 5: Planning your final piece and creating mock-ups or scaled-down versions to test ideas.
  • Week 6: Final piece practise under timed conditions and comprehensively polishing your portfolio.
To support your creative work throughout this workshop, essential materials are included:
  • An A3 sketchbook
  • Drawing pencils (HB, 2B, 4B)
  • An eraser, sharpener, and ruler
  • Paints (acrylics or watercolours) and brushes
  • Collage materials, a glue stick, and scissors
  • Fine liners or ink pens
This course is a developmental experience, designed to build your confidence and equip you with the skills and strategies needed to excel in your GCSE Art exam. You’ll leave with a more polished portfolio, refined artistic techniques, and a clear plan for your final piece, feeling thoroughly prepared for exam day.
