Learn the ancient art of blacksmithing at this beginner-friendly metalwork class.

8 hours Class size 1 to 8 guests       £175

Whether you're fascinated by craftsmanship, want to add a new skill to your repertoire or are looking for an unforgettable couples' activity in London, take a look at this knife forging class taught by Tom at the Green Wood Guild, who'll guide you through making your very own carving knife. Being able to take a rough bit of stock steel and turn it into a beautifully functioning edge tool is extremely satisfying, and very empowering!
On this one-day class at Stepney City Farm, you will learn how to make a ‘straight’ knife, a brilliant wood carving tool used for everything from spoons to shrink pots, as well as being useful in many other larger projects. Don't worry if the idea of forging your own blade sounds intimidating, as this class is suitable for people with no tool making experience.
You will forge and sharpen your own blade, as well as carving the handle, walking away with a beautiful new tool!

  • 5/5 from Heloise Anderson, attended Mar 2026: Had a great day forging my whittling knife. This is the first time I've done anything like this. Getting to use the equipment and learn the feel for the hammer strikes, using the machinery to put the bevels in etc was very cool. The instructors were super chilled and informative. Whittling the knife handle was intensely therapeutic. Can't lie, sharpening the knife is insanely tedious - but worth the effort in the end! Really recommend this to do - and, to any ladies purchasing this course for their menfolk, please, please, PLEASE consider doing it yourself!
  • 5/5 from Odie R, attended Jan 2026: Excellent class. It was definitely on the pricey side at £175/person, but for a whole-day workshop (9 am to 5 pm on a Saturday), materials, and three instructors' time (per group of up to 8 students, in our case we were 7), we felt it was worth it. The instructors are knowledgeable and just nerdy enough to satisfy one's curiousity without overwhelming with information or unnecessary generalisations. And the place is really lovely, a big farm in the middle of London, with goats and sheep and everything! There is practically no prior knowledge and experience required, except very minimal understanding of terminology and knowing how to hold a hammer and operate a drill, and they teach you how to do pretty much all the steps in the process yourself, while being there to help with the steps that are more challenging or take too long to master in a day. The resulting knife is a really nice whittling (Mora) knife that in itself is not just a souvenir but an invitation to continue crafting at home. Overall, a really fun day of making and excellent taster for several different skills, including forging, hollow-grinding, whittling, sharpening and more.
  • 5/5 from Mathew Kipling, attended Oct 2025: Such a fantastic workshop! The tutors did a great job of teaching us lots about the process and also ensuring everyone left with a knife they’re happy with- thank you again!
  • 5/5 from Marta Ninotti, attended Aug 2025: It was my partner's birthday present and he absolutely adored the knife forging experience. The teacher was very knowledgeableand helped him and the class throughoutthe experience. You do everything from hammering your own peace of metal to the wooden handle. Great experience
  • 5/5 from Ivi Tserkezou, attended Aug 2025: Tim and Archie were great. They explained and demonstrated everything in detail. You also get a basic understanding of the underlying process (forging, woodcarving etc.). I never felt lost on what to do. The class was very fun, chill and interesting. The instructors will help where they can (especially if you made a significant mistake during the process, to ensure you leave with a usable knife) but the end product will be your own, beautiful knife. I would totally recommend this experience.
  • 5/5 from Mark Ablett, attended Aug 2025: Brilliant class, expertly taught. I was a complete newcomer to metal and woodwork but I quickly got to grips with it under very helpful guidance. It is a full on day but immensely satisfying and I'd heartily recommend.
  • 5/5 from Joanna Ismene Douzenis, attended Aug 2025: This was a really great class! Got it as a birthday present and found it very interesting and fun. The teachers were knowledgeable and friendly- made the day go very fast and left with two lovely knives
  • 5/5 from Anonymised ClassBento customer, attended Nov 2024: Tim and Alex were exactly what you want in a course. They were funny, insiteful, supportive. Able to pitch skill and knowledge to all the differing experience level of the group so each person got to create their unique very sharp knife. They encouraged without interfering but were happy to help more hands on if asked and made the group relaxed throughout. We did over run but that was because they really wanted us all to make the best possible end product. You can tell both Tim and Alex are so skilled at their craft. Tim made special holders to improve the blade edging experience and I think it shows how dedicated he is to offering the best experience. We had our lunch break at local cafe nearby called two blackbirds - food was amazing there.
  • 5/5 from Suzanne Perrett, attended Nov 2024: Booked as a birthday gift for my boyfriend and we both thoroughly enjoyed the workshop with Tim & Alex! Recommend 100% if you want to try your hand at some knife making in London! Thank you for a great day
  • 5/5 from Justyne Potts, attended Nov 2024: Brought this experience for my Son and husband.. They came back and said they had a fantastic day with great instructors. I think they are planning their next class. Thank you so much
  • 5/5 from Kyle Bignell, attended Nov 2024: What a fantastic day! Our instructors, Alex and Tim, were great. They took us through blade forging, handle carving, blade sharpening, handle fitting, and the final assembly all whilst explaining the theory to us and answering our questions. The workshop itself is a treat for craftspeople, full of tools, books, projects, and endless amounts of coffee. Nestled inside a working farm you can also say hello to the friendly animals whilst on lunch break. I'm excited to start carving with the knife I made myself and will always remember the great day I had making it with some lovely people.
  • 5/5 from Anonymised ClassBento customer, attended Nov 2024: Had an awesome day with Tim and Alex, it was great fun and nice to come away with such a useful tool.
  • 4/5 from Nick Davidson, attended Nov 2024: Good teachers. Location was good and all materials were provided. Learning to make a "simple" knife was slightly more complex than one might think.

  • 5/5 from Fernando Gonzalez, attended Mar 2024: Really good fun, the instructors were patient and provided good background on the techniques used. Nice setting (in a city farm), cafe is really nice. It's a long day as there's a lot to cover/do so bring drink ad snacks and sort out dinner the day before (or get a take away when you get home).

  • 5/5 from Maryanne McGinn, attended Nov 2023: Thanks to Tim and Alex for running this well paced and enjoyable class; there was plenty of technical help on hand, I learned lots of new things here, and everyone went home with a handled knife which they had made themselves. I appreciated the emphasis on safety at all times, the good lighting, and the readily available refreshments. I have to mention also the great venue at Stepney City Farm: nice cafe and lots of sheep and goats frolicking in the fields.
  • 5/5 from Richard Goody, attended Nov 2023: Great fun with a nice crowd of novices (like me!). Really helpful, knowledgeable experts (thanks Tim and Alex) who definitely made the whole knife forging process a success for everyone. Nice City Farm setting with Cafe and farmers market on site. Brilliant day :)
  • 5/5 from Wendie Ottewill, attended Nov 2023: Amazing course. Superb course leader Tim. Course hands on from the kick off. Interesting and active course. Brilliant how you actually get straight into the making and worked with metal as well as wood. Nice class size and great outdoor (ish) setting.

  • 5/5 from Dan Turner, attended Nov 2023: The course was well run and professional. Each stage was explained and support from the team was available at all times. Individual advice and tuition was given to students at each stage of the process. The class was suitable for all levels.
  • 5/5 from Cecile Marcotte, attended Sep 2023: We loved the class, very fun and instructive, with two great teachers who were patient and very knowledgeable. Thank you again Alex and Tom!
  • 5/5 from Charles, attended Sep 2023: I went on the knife making course with my son and it was superb! The teachers, Tom and Alex, were extremely knowledgeable and professional, the environment / tools / facilities were all of a very high standard, and I really can’t think how the day could be improved. If you have not been on one of these courses you’re really missing out
  • 5/5 from Mike, attended Sep 2023: Tom and Alex were fantastic. Really enjoyed the day and I learned a lot. Thanks!
  • 5/5 from Ben Hext, attended Jun 2023: Class was great fun. Tom was very knowledgeable and helped me create a good quality knife! Would recommend to anyone looking for taste of metal and woodwork
  • 5/5 from Lushan Sun, attended Jun 2023: The class had great variety - forging, sawing, carving, grinding etc. The teacher was very patient and spent a great deal of time with each of us and helping us when we couldn’t get something right. Would definitely recommend to friends.
  • 5/5 from Anastazja Harding, attended Mar 2023: Enjoyed the experience very much. Attention to everyone's hot working techniques was very much appreciated and I felt like my skills improved throughout the day. Everyone took home a functional blade and a sense of achievement.
  • 5/5 from Sara Abdulla, attended Mar 2023: Awesome day. Thank you so much. Tom & Tom super patient and inspiring. Highly recommend.
  • 5/5 from Alex Rinsler, attended Nov 2022: This was the best craft experience I've had. The teachers coached us through every step brilliantly. I left feeling inspired and proud of my achievement.
  • 5/5 from Eddie Wright, attended Nov 2022: The class was very good. Tom and Tim, the instructors, were both very knowledgeable and were able to clearly pass on the details of what we needed to do at each stage. I enjoyed the class and at the end of the day had successfully forged and fitted a sharp wood caring knife.
  • 5/5 from Adrian, attended Nov 2022: Everything was great organised and perfectly timed. I wish we had more time to learn about the details about the material used (steel types etc.) and to get to know more about blacksmiting. The foundation theory should be covered, maybe by some fun interactive talk/quizes. If we had bit more time it would have been good to have more interaction between participants and the teacher to create the bound and further motivation. In general I would reccomend the course and the venue to anyone interested in carving in wood and getting to work with steel. I came back with a great and sharp small knife. I'm looking forward to see more courses for blacksmithing in particular at this venue!
  • 5/5 from Ivelin Iliev, attended Oct 2022: Outstanding, Enjoyed all the day Very friendly and welcoming! Learn so many new things. Thank you
  • 5/5 from Sergio Linares, attended Oct 2022: Awesome experience with Tom, he is great giving you trough the whole process. The place is full of material and tools to use, can't wait to try the next workshop.
  • 5/5 from Daniel Brady, attended May 2022: Tom was a great instructor. He gave us the important information and training without overloading us, and he was happy to explain more, answer questions, and help us achieve specific results with our knives. He kept us moving at a good pace, and rather than rushing the folks whose knives were progressing slower than others he simply helped us catch up so we could all stay on track together. I would love to take another of his workshops, if he does any others. The woodcraft workshop at Stepney Farm is a small space but well-suited to classes like this, and the atmosphere of the farm itself really sets the tone for a day of woodcraft. All materials were provided and more than adequate for our purposes. The workshops at the Green Wood Guild are expensive, but I don't think they are unreasonable for the experiences I've had. You're paying for 8+ hours of personal instruction from an experienced craftsman, plus the cost of the materials and exclusive use of the woodworking studio and its resources. You also get to take what you make, not just what you learn. So if you're like me and can afford to spend money on passions but aren't certain woodcraft is for you, I'd recommend these workshops: the instructors are quite passionate about what they're teaching you, so even if they don't end up passing along their passion to you, you'll at least have a good time.
  • 5/5 from Charlie Woolley, attended May 2022: A really engaging and challenging day learning new skills and developing techniques. Fantastic location. Patient and communicative instructor. Most important of all we got to make a knife! Highly recommended.
  • 5/5 from Will Allen, attended May 2022: Great class, great venue! Very well structured and relaxed. The pace was perfect for everyone. Tom is a fantastic teacher and explained quite a technical process very clearly and simply. I did the course on a Saturday and the farmers market was on at the farm, so there was a really nice atmosphere. Lots of nice areas to relax and enjoy the sunshine.
  • 5/5 from Jo Yu, attended Mar 2022: Love the workshop! Super happy with the knife. Can't wait for the next one.
  • 5/5 from Zoe Horne, attended Mar 2022: Clear, excellent guidance pitched at the right level for me and I think the rest of the group.pacing of the day worked well. Ended up with a knife I am so proud of.thank you
