The books and previous work that were available to look at worked as creative inspiration - and were a conversation starter for the people on at the session. The addition of food and drinks was a lovely touch, 5 hours isn’t a long time but having something to eat kept one goong. I thought the studio was perfect, a well prepared organised space for a number of people to be at a class.

I am a beginner and found the wood block offered such a nice handfeel and carving was a very relaxing and therapeutic experience. There are definitely skills to be gained over time but this was an excellent starting point and I am tempted to return to continue working on my piece to see what other interesting prints I might be able to produce, maybe even with multiple colours. The prints are very natural and different every time, sometimes showcasing patterns in the wood. Alex is a talented artist offering calm and helpful guidance, as much or as little as desired. It is evident Alex holds a great love for his craft. Give it a try, even if you feel your artistic skills might currently be in hiding. You never know what you might create and either way it’s a few hours away from the everyday to unplug and try something new. Highly recommend!

Alex did an amazing job introducing us to woodcarving and printing, first by showing us examples and techniques, but more importantly, by getting us hands-on and creating from the very beginning. It was wonderful to be able to try out different techniques before carving our own unique pieces, and we’re so pleased with what we created! The studio itself is a true oasis of calm, making the whole experience even more enjoyable. This class definitely went above and beyond our expectations. By far the best class we’ve done on Bento over the past few years - 100% recommended! Thanks again Alex :)

His passion for the craft made the whole experience very engaging and inspiring :) He introduced us to the basics of his craft, shared different techniques, and guided us through the process with patience and encouragement. The studio itself had such a calm and peaceful atmosphere, where we could easily focus, be creative, and completely lose ourselves in the process (in the best way!). We would highly recommend this workshop to anyone - whether you’re interested in detailed, hands-on art work or simply looking for a fun creative activity to enjoy with friends or family. We had a fantastic time and are hoping to do more woodcut printing in the future!

He explaines everything clearly, including a bit of the history and context of wood cut printing. Everything is provided, you need and Alex helps you to realise your aims, while allowing you the space to explore your own creativity. This was a complete escape from the stresses of life, and we found ourselves fully engaged and focused for three hours. I would love to come back and do this for longer! The workshop space is beautiful and inspiring too.

I went to learn about linocut, but Alex introduced me to woodcut– a rabbit hole I was delighted to fall down and would not have tried without his help. As I had done some basic linocut, I was able to use the lesson to explore with Alex refining my self-taught technique which I really appreciated. The time flew by and I thoroughly enjoyed myself. Alex is an experienced printmaker and enjoys teaching. He is very patient! His studio is an inspirational space with lots of art on the walls, books, images, and equipment to experiment with. I would be happy to recommend a lesson with Alex.

He really enjoyed the session and experimented with making his own reduction cut print. I had never done any kind of printing before and expected to find it quite difficult but it was actually a much easier process than I had expected and I would definitely like to do it again! Alex was a good teacher and interesting to talk to, the session was relaxed, we worked at our own pace and we both came away having learned a lot. We now have a list of materials to have a go with ourselves too. It was an enjoyable and memorable afternoon! Thanks Alex

This gave it a friendly and achievable feeing, you can see how much potential the technique has and where you’d like to take your printmaking. Alex made a delicious soup for us, and was very generous with his conversations and insights. We then got to cutting and printing our work, which Alex guided us through in a calm and encouraging manner. We ended with a few prints that I’m really proud of and I think it’s due to Alex’s guidance. Go for it!
