Join London-based printmaker Alex Booker and create your own artwork using a Japanese wood block printing method.
Draw and cut your own woodblock using Japanese Shina plywood and traditional tools and explore the process of hand-printing on different paper types. Then learn how to use multiple blocks to build colour and design, as well as reduction-cutting techniques to create more complex prints.
Both sides of the wood as useable so you will have plenty of time to create one or two designs. You will be able to make multiple prints and even create your own editions if you wish! Prints will be safely rolled ready to carry home.
Suitable for beginners. All equipment and materials will be provided as well as non alcoholic refreshments.
Alex recommends bringing material or inspiration for your prints to help create your designs - he often draws inspiration from postcards, photos and drawings for his own work. There will also be plenty of art books and prints from previous workshops to show this exciting and varied art form!
Alex, Thank you for a fun and informative class. I look forward to trying what I learned asap.
Really great teacher, a great artist. Very inspiring and encouraging. Learned lots of new things. Studio was hard to find, directions would have been helpful. Would highly recommend.
My sister got me this woodblock printing class for Christmas and what an incredible experience it was!
Alex is a gent and the studio is an amazing creative space. I highly, highly recommend the course!
Alex was professional and well organised. He had lots of examples to look at and provided all the materials needed for the class. I learnt about the technique of woodcut, how to use the tools, and how to print it. I was very pleased with my results, and took my prints and woodblock home at the end. I had lots of questions which he answered in detail, and suggested ways I could work at home and where to buy my own materials. I had a fantastic day in an artist studio!
Super fun and very useful for dipping your toes on woodcut printing. Alex really knows and loves this craft, and he was a great teacher!
Amazing workshop! Alex was an awesome teacher. The start of the workshop was well thought out, showing how to use the different tools and different ways to create prints. Then onto creating our own artwork - Alex had loads of inspiration for us to look at but also supported us in making our own designs. It was brilliant, cannot recommend enough
Workshop is held in a unique and old art’s factory which seems completely abandoned from the outside.
Alex is a warm and accommodating host. He explained how to use different woodcutting tools and what are various creative techniques in wood printing.
With Alex’s help and patient guidance I was able to create my first own prints in just a couple of hours. I definetely recommend trying Alex’s workshop if you are interested in woodcutting printing. He is full of knowledge and passionate about his craft!
