Double-Sided Silk Embroidery Bookmark Workshop for Beginners

Make a double-sided silk bookmark at this beginners' embroidery class in Ealing.

1.5 hours Location Ealing Class size 1 to 6 guests   £45

Discover the magic of double-sided Su embroidery in this 90-minute embroidery class in London, where the stitching looks just as lovely from the back as from the front. Worked on sheer silk gauze with every thread end tucked neatly inside the stitch, this centuries-old technique from Suzhou is still rarely taught in the UK, so this is a chance to try something truly special.
Guided by the Royal Chou studio, you'll start your own double-sided silk bookmark and learn the three building blocks of silk shading (stem, leaf and petal) at your seat. You'll split fine silk thread and lay it on the gauze, and each date has its own seasonal floral or animal design. You'll take everything home with your kit and a step-by-step sheet, so you can finish your bookmark in your own time.
No experience is needed, so complete beginners are very welcome. Most people spend another hour or two at home completing their bookmark, and you'll take home a keepsake that, once finished, looks lovely from both sides. Our July 2026 group rated the class 9/10, and both of our October 2026 sessions at Knit + Stitch London sold out.

Royal Chou

Royal Chou began with two women who share a name, Zhou, working between Suzhou and London. We work in Suzhou silk embroidery, a craft passed hand to hand for two thousand years: silk split into strands finer than a hair, stitched on sheer silk until a piece is finished on both sides, with no wrong side.
Our co-founder and master embroiderer, Joni Zhou, is the third generation of a Suzhou needlework family. She is a four-time gold medallist of China's Hundred Flowers craft award, has lectured at the Royal School of Needlework, and teaches two courses in the RSN's 2027 programme at Hampton Court Palace. Our embroiderers have taught more than two thousand people.
We teach because we remember what our hands make long after we forget what we read. Our beginners' classes are small and patient: you learn the building blocks at your seat, then take a kit home to keep going. Our July 2026 group scored us 9/10, and both our October 2026 sessions at Knit + Stitch London sold out.
Our pansy and cherry kits are endorsed by the Royal School of Needlework, and the British Library stocks our Shakespeare scarf.
