What you'll do
Looking to really kickstart your ceramics journey? This beginner-friendly wheel-throwing course is perfect for those looking to introduce a new clay-filled hobby to their life and learn the all-important basics of wheel throwing. This 6-week wheel throwing course is for those looking to get familiar with the wheel as well as those looking to develop their throwing skills further! Students will learn:
- The cycle of clay from start to finish and information about types of clay and firings.
- How to centre the clay and form a pot on the potter's wheel. We will begin by focusing on developing strong key throwing skills – centring, lifting, shaping (cylinders and bowls) and finishing on the wheel. An experienced and skilled tutor will expand by teaching more complex shapes and with bigger weights of clay depending on each student's ability.
- Turning (trimming) a pot – this is the method of finishing and finessing thrown work once leather hard (partly dried) by returning it to the wheel and removing excess clay using a metal tool.
- Pulling handles to give your pots extra functionality and style.
- Creating your own maker's mark to stamp your pots with.
- Surface decoration - carving and slip decoration techniques
- How to glaze your pots to achieve the best finish with our wide selection of unique, in-house studio glazes.

What you'll get
Materials, glazes, and tools are provided throughout the course. Each student will have their own wheel to work on for the entire course. Clay is charged at £4 per kg (pots are only weighed once finished and ready for firing, clay for throwing practise is unlimited).

This course caters to all levels.
What to bring
Please bring an apron or an old shirt, a towel, a pen, and a notepad. We have a wide selection of tools available but you may wish to bring your own if you have them.Please tie back long hair, be ready to remove rings, bracelets, and watches, and cut fingernails short.

As increasing amounts of industrial space is converted to luxury apartments, London creatives are finding it next to impossible to find studios at an affordable price.Urban Potters is the latest open-access studio set up in South London to meet this huge demand for creative space. When the developers dropped the eviction notice on professional potter Adrian Gonzalez to quit his large bright studio in West Norwood he wanted to create a similar space with plenty of natural light, but without the leaky roof. So with a loan from the bank he set about finding and fitting out his ideal space in which everybody could thrive. In June 2022 Urban Potters opened for business just by Camberwell Green. Adrian continues to work as a professional potter alongside teaching workshops; in 2023 he was awarded the London Potters Judges Choice Winner, and has completed commissions for Soho House and St Barts restaurant. Adrian's work has also been seen on series 1 and 2 of the popular BBC series Interior Design Masters.
