Visible Mending Workshop for Beginners

Join us for a welcoming darning workshop in London.

2.5 hours Class size 1 to 8 guests

£20 - £75 (£20 for 14-18 yr old Public Class; £35 for Adult Public Class; £75 for 1:1 Private Class) (PayPal Pay in 3 available)

In this welcoming, beginner-friendly darning class in London, you'll learn different ways to darn (creating a woven patch) to repair holes in your clothes. You will also learn how to repair worn or damaged areas where a hole hasn't fully emerged. These techniques can also be used to cover stains or work as an embellishment in their own right.
The class is aimed at beginners, but those with sewing experience are very welcome too. You'll have time to sit and stitch together and really practice your new skill, ensuring you leave ready to (and excited about) approaching your mend pile.
We'll start at the very beginning -- we'll show you the best way to thread a needle and how to start a hand-sewing project without using any knots, so there's nothing uncomfortable against your skin once you wear the finished garment.
We'll look at the different types of yarn and thread that are best suited for each fabric and explore ways to play with colour, texture, and shape so that your mends are beautiful as well as functional, whether they're discreet or distinctive.
Accessibility: Unfortunately, there is no wheelchair access. We are situated on the first floor. To those with allergies, I have two cats, who, although won't be taking part in the class, do use the room we'll be in on other occasions.
What you'll get
All materials will be provided, including darning mushrooms, thread, needles, fabric to practice on, and a take-home sheet that covers everything taught on the day.
Knowledge required
Beginner-friendly.
What to bring
Please feel free to also bring your own items to work on, such as cotton and cotton-blend fabrics, linen, wool or cashmere. Socks can be a good place to start!

Mending since 2018. My work has featured in The Guardian, The Observer and The Refinery UK, and I have facilitated workshops in art galleries, hospitals and community spaces.
Repairing your own clothes is a small, radical act - making a commitment to the objects we take into our lives and refusing the (il)logic of disposability. It is also a tender, creative one: to mend is to attend closely to breakage, making a small artwork of repair that lives on the body. I am passionate about teaching sewing - the ancient technology of needle and thread - and sharing the pleasure of mending and making with your own hands.
