(a wonderful opportunity to combine a workshop with a visit to the chapel afterwards. A discount voucher will be available)
I hope to see you there
More details will follow
Thank you for your support
Can’t see a date that suits? Request your own that does.. (If you can drag along a friend, then your welcome to request a ‘private’ lesson otherwise it may be open to others) thank you. Will
I’m very flexible on dates, so you’re most welcome to book a “class”. as long as the desired date doesn’t clash with other existing bookings (please give a few alternatives if possible)
Most classes now start at 10am.
Design and make your very own Copper A6 pocket book or the larger A5 Journal.
In this class, you will learn the practical skills needed to create a copper-fronted journal.
You'll be guided through the process of embossing and ageing the copper and thereafter bind the paper using a simple Japanese ‘stab’ binding technique, allowing it to be opened completely flat - perfect for note-taking and sketching.
Don't worry if you're a beginner - this workshop is designed for those with a desire to create for themselves. You'll learn how to bind the pages (180 gsm ivory paper stock), create hardcovers from reclaimed copper and leather (Vegan leatherette available), sew paper, and handle various materials, tools, and adhesives.
Experience the ancient art of metalwork and the craft of bookbinding, developing hand skills and creativity along the way.
The atmosphere in the studio will be warm and welcoming, with plenty of refreshments to keep you energised.
By the end of the workshop, you'll have not only gained new skills and confidence but also have your journal to take home. It's the perfect opportunity for book lovers, artists, and writers looking to delve into a rich and versatile craft.

  • 5/5 from Rachel Mountain, attended Sep 2026: Great class, Will explains everything in detail and takes time to make sure I achieved the best result possible!
  • 5/5 from Ilona McAllister, attended Sep 2026: Thoroughly enjoyable day, both in terms of skills learnt and the pleasure of making in such a great environment. The time flew by and the end result made me feel really satisfied at having achieved such a lot in a day. Lovely company and gave me a real desire to do more which is always a sign of a top course
  • 5/5 from Samantha Juarez, attended Jul 2026: This workshop A Bookbinding Class That Won My Heart I can’t recommend this bookbinding workshop enough. Not only did he take the time to share the history of bookbinding (and a delicious lunch!), but he walked me through the entire process step-by-step so I could really understand it, which mattered a lot to me since this is something I want to bring back home and share with others. He customized the class to fit how I learn, patiently guiding me through each step. I left with more journals than I’d planned to make because I fell in love with the whole experience, not just his beautiful artwork and craftsmanship, but with bookbinding itself. If you’re looking for a warm, hands-on class taught by someone who clearly loves what he does, this is it.
  • 5/5 from Elvis Persson, attended Jun 2026: I had a lovely time with Will during this class. I had designed the picture a few days beforehand and Will scaled it. I wasn’t fully satisfied with my design but it turned out better on the metal, and it wasn’t as hard as I thought and I’m happy that I got to learn a bit about the history of metal working. He told me he mostly get locals coming but as a tourist I also recommend taking a day of your travels to do a class like this. It’s good spent time and you get to take something with you to define your stay
  • 5/5 from Campbell Hardie, attended May 2026: Honestly, a brilliant gift as the course was just fantastic. Will, the teacher, is a natural and guided us with patience, humour and lots of little history lessons. At times it was like watching alchemy and we were also incredibly pleased with the end results. This is a fantastic idea for a gift experience, oh and lunch was included. Our ages ranged from 13 to 56 and we all.loved it. Buy the course, you won't regret it.
  • 5/5 from Samuil Vutov, attended May 2026: Will was great, helpful during the whole process, made us feel comfortable in his studio and we loved the booked we crafted.
  • 5/5 from Raya Koldova, attended May 2026: Great class! Very helpful instructor and relaxed atmosphere. End result turned out better than expected.
  • 5/5 from Sally Rutkowska, attended May 2026: My daughter (13) and I had a really fantastic day with Will. It was very chilled, he was an excellent teacher, and we're over the moon with our books. They look amazing, despite us being absolute beginners with all of the skills involved. Would definitely recommend.
  • 5/5 from Harrison Roberts, attended Apr 2026: This was truly an amazing and unique class. Will was a terrific host and guide—seriously the best. With his care, passion, and approachable personality, he made the entire experience better than I could have ever imagined. My son, who is like most teenage boys in respect to attitude and emotions, thought it was the best thing we’ve done on vacation and can’t stop talking about it. The class really does take about six hours. That’s because you are crafting by a hand a one of a kind item using artistry and not just assembling a premade product. I would highly recommend this activity and would do it again. Six stars out of five!
  • 5/5 from Kendal Delaney, attended Feb 2026: Had an amazing day with Will and our wee class. Just three of us so we had loads of help and time to chat as we worked. Loved learning about the history as we went through each step. And now I have a fabulous notebook to grace my D&D notes forever! Thank you
  • 5/5 from Alec Martin, attended Feb 2026: Great class - learned loads, covered a lot of ground, and throughout was supported really well by Will, who is a first rate tutor. Ended up with a notebook I'll cherish. Would highly recommend this class.
  • 5/5 from Amy Brown, attended Feb 2026: Will is super friendly, relaxed and knowledgeable. I came to the class with a bit of an 'out of the box' request and he handled this with enthusiasm, both before and during the class. He really is very skilled at what he does, but at the same time is encouraging and makes you feel like you are not a novice. I would do this class again, and again. The finished product is wonderful and learning all the steps of the process was very helpful.
  • 5/5 from Barbara Kerr, attended Jan 2026: Will was great - gave me a warm welcome. He was friendly, knowledgable, and demonstrated each step of the process. The whole day felt very relaxed event though we got a lot done! and at the end I came away with my personal unique refillable journal. definitely recommend.
  • 5/5 from Adrian Hickey, attended Nov 2025: Will was an excellent teacher giving a history of book binding with comparisons to modern techniques. He explained the process very well and when we started on our project he made extra effort to ensure that we took the time to produce a good quality book cover. Giving guidance as our particular projects progressed led to a result that would not have been achievable with a less diligent teacher. Once the embossed copper covers were completed Will ensured that we properly bound the books and the results were spectacular.
  • 5/5 from Gail Riding, attended Oct 2025: Absolutely loved this class. Took a lot of concentration at times (and frowning lol) but so worth it to create a fantastic and unique book!! Will is very informative and looks after the class really well! Good banter, good snacks and a good time!!!! Day well spent

  • 5/5 from Chris Pirie, attended Jun 2025: I booked this as a gift for my partner’s birthday, and it was a fabulous day. Will was in touch before hand to get our ideas add source material to prep for the class. On the day Will was great, and really helped us get the best out of the topics we had chosen. He has so much skill and knowledge and just being in the space was a wonderful experience. Seeing the transformation from a freah shiny sheet of copper to the tarnished aged plate, then onto the notebook was magical. I was so pleased with the finished notebook, and would definitely recommend the workshop.
  • 5/5 from Pauline Campbell, attended Jun 2025: Had a great day with Will. Cant believe what I produced at the end of it. His skill, knowledge and teaching methods help make creating the books easier than you think so if you think you need any prior talent, you dont. Give it a go, you'll be glad you did. It's great to have something at the end you can be proud of that you've made, to be able to gift or keep.
  • 5/5 from Zhenya Matyunina, attended May 2025: What a great class! Very informative, but relaxed and fun. Will is a very good teacher: patient and supportive. He is very happy to answer all your questions related to the process. I was expecting to get something very basic done as I had no experience in working with metal, but with Will's clear instructions and tips I was very pleased with the final result: a lovely little journal. Many thanks!
  • 5/5 from Gurpreet, attended Mar 2025: The workshop was such an enjoyable experience and thank you to Will for being so helpful throughout the whole process. It was a fascinating look into repoussé and book creation — and we now have our very own unique handmade items that we can keep forever. We would definitely recommend this class to others!
  • 5/5 from Claire Monaghan, attended Jan 2025: Fantastic class, William is great and took his time showing and telling us about each part of the process. He is very knowleagable and we learned a lot as well as leaving with a beautiful, handmade journal. I'd really recommend this.
  • 5/5 from Annabelle Delacoe, attended Dec 2024: Absolutely loved this class! Me and my two friends booked a private class as a festive treat and we loved every minute of it. • 5/5 from Karin, attended Nov 2024: Will was fantastic, very welcoming and a great teacher. Had an enjoyable day and came away with a finished piece I was happy to give someone as a special gift. Would highly recommend.

Hello I’m Will Phoenix and I've always been slightly obsessed with books... thou not the reading type, but the empty ones...the dusty old journal, them marbled edged Victorian ledgers, the ageing leather notebook or the beautiful sketch pad. A constant sketcher, i still carry around a pencil and pad, happily losing myself drawing (instead of finger tapping a smart phone).
As bookmaker (I don't call myself a binder) I recently fell heavily for leather work, a new apprenticeship almost. After spending substantially more than the much talked about "10, 000 hours" on embossing (repoussé) soft metals, I felt it time for a fresh challenge. I started at the basement level and repeated what i did 24 years ago when I picked up my first sheet of metal to shape into a book cover
I presented my work for sale since the beginning and in this world of the cheap/mass produced, I've realised there is still a small place for the individual, the actual unique 'one of a kind' piece. I carry no airs and graces and never over-precious about my work. I simply makes books. I’m looking forward to teaching., Kindest Regards
Will
