Join this sewing class in Edinburgh and spend a relaxed, creative day learning how to sew from scratch in a friendly, supportive studio. This one-day workshop is perfect for complete beginners – you'll learn how to use a sewing machine with confidence, then make a beautiful reversible tote bag that folds into a handy carry pouch.
We'll start right at the beginning by threading the machine, winding a bobbin, and sewing your very first seam. You'll build essential skills step by step, with plenty of time to practise and ask questions. These are the foundations of all sewing – the techniques you'll use again and again whether you want to make clothes, cushions, or future craft projects.
Once you're feeling comfortable, we'll move on to choosing your fabrics, laying everything out, and cutting your pieces accurately. Cutting fabric for the first time can feel a bit daunting, but you'll be guided gently through print direction, grainlines, and how to use specialist fabric shears safely. These are valuable skills that will help you progress into dressmaking later on.
The atmosphere in the studio is completely relaxed and friendly, meaning there's always time for a chat and a laugh. Learning a new craft should feel enjoyable, not stressful, and you'll be supported at every stage as you sew your bag together and add the handles for a neat, strong finish.
You'll be learning from Artisan Stitch, a multi-award-winning sewing school recognised for high-quality teaching and exceptional student support. Holding a Certificate of Excellence for Best Sewing Classes in Edinburgh and a UK Enterprise Award for Best Sewing Classes, you can feel confident that you're learning from an experienced, trusted tutor.

I’m Jen, a textile artist and award‑winning sewing educator, and sewing has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. I started hand‑sewing at the age of four and was confidently using a sewing machine by seven. That early spark never faded — fabric, thread and creativity have been lifelong companions, and they eventually led me to build a career in textiles and, later, to open my own studio, Artisan Stitch, here in Edinburgh.
Before founding Artisan Stitch, I worked in high‑end knitwear and spent many years immersed in the craft and design world. But teaching is where I truly found my purpose. I love helping people discover what they can create with their own hands, and I’m passionate about making sewing accessible, enjoyable and confidence‑building for everyone. There’s nothing better than seeing a student’s face light up when a technique finally clicks or they finish a project they never thought they could make.
Over the years I’ve taught thousands of students — from complete beginners to experienced sewists — and I’ve been honoured to receive multiple national awards recognising the quality of my teaching and workshops. I’ve also been featured in local newspapers and invited to teach in schools, which has been a wonderful way to share sewing with the next generation.
My classes are friendly, relaxed and supportive, with lots of individual guidance. I believe creativity should feel joyful, not intimidating, and I love watching students leave with new skills, new confidence and something beautiful they’ve made themselves.
When I’m not teaching, you’ll find me in my studio experimenting with textiles, developing new workshops or happily stitching away with a cup of tea. I’d love to welcome you to a class and help you discover the pleasure of making something with your own hands.
