Why DIY Terrariums Are Great for Beginners

By Betty Gardiner

If you want some new green friends, our London terrarium classes can help you grow a few. Even serial plant killers can make a terrarium and help it thrive! Before you know it, you’ll have a slice of nature encased in a beautiful glass terrarium making your home look beautiful.

So you’ve never been much of a gardener? That’s okay. Our experienced teachers and DIY terrarium tutors will be there to help you every step of the way. A live online class is a great way to learn how to make a terrarium, as you can get your plants ready for their new home in the comfort of your own.

We’re here to guide you through how a terrarium can change your life and prepare you to venture into the world of plant care.

How do glass terrariums work?

The best place to start is by explaining what a terrarium even is. They are mini gardens that can fit inside of a glass container - you can think of your DIY terrarium almost like a greenhouse.

Terrariums recycle water again and again to sustain themselves and require very little maintenance, which is the exact kind of plant you want when you’re just starting out!

Once you’ve gotten your hands dirty with soil and had a go at making a terrarium, you’ll see how resilient they are. With the information you learn in your online class, you can make a mini garden that will withstand cold and irregular temperatures, erratic care or minimal water and even low light.

To seal or not to seal?! And how to best care for your terrarium

There are two types of glass terrariums in this world; those that are sealed and ones that are not. They each have their own pros and cons and need different terrarium plants to make them work.

Ferns, mosses, orchids and tropical plants are best for a closed terrarium. This is really cool because you can own some plants you might have thought were impossible to grow in the cold UK climate. Succulents, jade plants, aloe vera and cacti are good for open terrariums, and they’re much easier for beginners. You get all the experience of caring for and building a terrarium, without the hassle of the things that usually kill these mini-jungles as they’re much more forgiving!

If you sign up for an online terrarium making class, you will be sent a DIY kit full of the best terrarium plants for the type of container you'll be using. You'll be shown how to make your terrarium and you'll be given lots of tips and step by step guidance as to how to care for it once your class is over.

Get stuck in and make your own terrarium

The best way to get to know your plants is to grow them yourself. You get to see it start as a little baby and grow into maturity. Watch your confidence as a plant parent grow as your little green pals do.

Try one of our terrarium workshops when you need things to do on a rainy day at home to make you feel more full of life. It will brighten your day and teach you some great skills. Your teachers will be able to turn you from a foliage fledgeling into a plant pro! Don’t be-leaf me? Try it for yourself.

Making a terrarium is a useful stepping stone in getting familiar with plants and how to care for them. After all, terrariums are much harder to kill than houseplants or flowers. While they need less maintenance, you might need to check them over now and again.

The benefits of building a terrarium

Having fun with plants is a really creative thing to do when bored that will help you feel more refreshed. So if you need any indoor activities to help you destress after a long week at work, then look no further. As well as plants, your terrarium craft box also comes with fun decorations for you to get imaginative with, from pretty pebbles and superb stones to fun figurines and awesome ornaments. So you can really personalise your DIY terrarium and make it unique.

Making a terrarium is also a really productive thing to do at home as being around plants can promote focus. Your mini garden is a great desk buddy and might be useful when it comes to working. A terrarium will humidify your air in winter when it’s dry, improve your air quality by removing toxins and in general make your space feel cleaner and fresher.

While terrariums are great things to make at home as a creative outlet or to help purify your air, most importantly, they are super pretty. Terrariums are perfect easy-care plants that make for gorgeous DIY home decor. They add a pop of colour to any room and give you a little taste of the outdoors. They’re perfect for university halls, work desks in offices, and can even make the most dismal corners of your home look charming.
