Portrait Embroidery Course

Make something truly special at this three-week embroidery course.

A fabulous embroidery course - open to embroiderers of all levels.
During this course, you will be guided by an expert tutor to create a beautiful and personalised portrait embroidery - a wonderful keepsake, heirloom, or gift!
The course is run one Sunday a month - 4 hours per session, and there will be an opportunity to embroider during each class, but it would be expected that a little homework is done between sessions.
Session 1 - Intro to portrait embroidery
  • What is portrait embroidery? Styles, Effects, and Terminology
  • Composition, resolution, and colour
  • Tracing and pattern making
  • colour scheme
  • Practice stitching
  • Starting to Stitch
  • To do at home - Work on the coarse structures and large areas
Session 2 - Continuing to Stitch
  • Working up from coarse to fine details
  • Eyes and mouths
  • Shading
  • Stitches, placement, and texture (using a practise template)
  • Textures and movement, and intro to embellishment
  • Hair and Fabric
  • Highlights and lowlights
  • To do at home - Continue finer detail and choose 1 element of embellishment after research
Session 3 - Finishing your pieces
  • Intro to beading, appliqué, and stumpwork
  • Working on embellishment
  • Finishing edges
  • Outlines and fine details
  • Backing the hoop
  • Admiring finished pieces!
This course is run over 3 months - last Sunday of each month
January 26th, February 23rd & March 30th - £180 - that's £60 per session. 12.30 to 4.30pm
What you'll get
Some materials are included - embroidery frame, needles and fabric - it's best folks buy their own embroidery thread to match their personal colours sheme
Knowledge required
It is advised that attendees are familiar with embroidery - perhaps have attended a shorter embroidery class with Edinburgh Sewcial Club or practise cross stitch or embroidery at home.
What to bring
Prior to course attendees will email a photograph of the portrait they'd like to copy

This class series runs over 3 consecutive sessions, at the same time every 4 weeks.

The Edinburgh Sewcial Club first opened its doors in 2014 teaching garment making, sewing machine skills, pattern cutting, embroidery and other textiles crafts to people of all ages, levels of ability and experience in evening and weekend workshops and courses in Meadowbank, Edinburgh.
Our relaxing, fun, social classes are a great way to try something new and learn a practical craft and skill!
Now, as well as dressmaking and sewing there are also a number of other textile crafts taught, beading, embroidery, upcycling & mending even fleece mermaid tail blankets! Our 'sewcial club' is a friendly environment to get creative!
