What you'll do

If you're interested in steam-bending and want to improve your skills or you're looking for a new craft to try out, have a look at this online course, starring masters of the craft Charlie Whinney Studio with guest teacher for 2023 (and design legend) David Colewell.

For the first time we are offering all our knowledge of this eco-friendly process online as well as in-person - dip in and out as you please over the long weekend and ask questions live.

Your online ticket gets you:

Continuous live footage of the course as it happens, from Charlie Whinney Studio.
Opportunity to ask questions and make suggestions with the various exercises.
Edited highlights emailed to you at the end of each day.

Friday 2nd June: Beginners Course (The Basics)
10.00 - 11.30 - Time in the woods, science of steam-bending, bending different species.
11.30 - 12.30 - Introduction to Sculptural Steam Bending, twisting, platting, splitting solid wood etc...
BREAK
1.30 - 2.30 - 5 Types of Compression Strap
3pm - 5pm - Learn to make a simple lampshade! The whole process is laid out from first principles.

Saturday 3rd June (Learning)
10.00 - 10.30 Green Bending (no steam)
10.30 - 12.30 Taking Sculptural bending further with and without jigs and GIANT Architectural Bends (160mm x 160mm x 3.5m Oak beams)!!!
1.30 - 5pm - David Colwell intro to Batch Work
6pm – Talk by David Colwell

Sunday 4th June (Doing)
10am - 12.30 - Mini design brief and Bench Bend.
1.30 - 5-6pm - Chair in an Afternoon (our most celebrated exercise - see up to 3 different chairs be created in just a few hours, learn a dozen or more large and small innovations to make this possible)

Monday (Consolidating)
11am - 12.30am Hot Laminating, Other Secrets and Steam-Chambers

End of structured teaching
1.30 - 5pm Finishing personal projects in the workshop, final experiments, we'll stay online until 5pm for any additional questions etc...

Charlie Whinney Studio was set up by the artist in 2012. We pioneer new ways to work with steam bending to create beautiful low- carbon wood products to compete and take the place of other less eco-friendly materials where possible.

Charlie Whinney has created large-scale steam-bent art installations all over the world, as well as designing and making award-winning furniture and lighting.

WHAT IS STEAM BENDING?
Steam Bending is a term used to describe heating wood until it is pliable and may be bent into new shapes.

The workshop runs a year-round programme of woodwork courses from the forest-based studio in Cumbria including Beginners, 3 Day Pro and Makers Sessions & gift vouchers.

We also offer gift vouchers for our online live Lamp making workshops.
