Looking for fun things to do in Edinburgh? Delight in a Scottish classic as you learn how to bake buttery, blissful shortbread with the Edinburgh New Town Cookery School.

During this Edinburgh baking class, you will dive deep into this rich baking tradition. With plenty of guidance from your friendly, experienced teachers, you will learn a cherished family recipe to craft melt-in-the-mouth shortbread.

You'll learn how to shape the dough into three variations— delicate Petticoat Tails, irresistibly rolled Highlander Shortbread coated in demerara sugar and classic shortbread biscuits. Along the way, you'll also explore different flavourings to elevate your goodies to new heights.

Once this baking class is over, you'll walk away with your tasty shortbread all packed up so you can share your handiwork with your loved ones! Don't want to share? Then book a private class as a fun group activity.

The recipes made in this class contain gluten, and dairy and are not suitable for vegans (please note this list is not exhaustive).
Please let us know of any dietary requirements, allergies or special accommodations required at the time of booking. We will be as flexible as possible when we can, so as to be inclusive to all students. However, we may not be able to substitute ingredients in the recipes.

Please note:

Our one-day workshops and short courses are 16+ unless otherwise specified. Children aged 14 or 15 may attend with an adult over 18.
On the day, please arrive 15 minutes before your workshop is due to start.

Since opening its doors in December 2009, the Edinburgh New Town Cookery School has been teaching classic and creative cookery in a professional but informal atmosphere.

Situated in the heart of the Scottish capital’s city centre, Edinburgh New Town Cookery School offers courses, designed to put every student on the right path to becoming a successful cook.

The diverse range of courses offer something for every level of ability, from chefs to homemakers and students to food enthusiasts. A practical, professional approach will give students the skills to cook with confidence and develop the essential skills necessary to be a success in the culinary world.

The school spans five floors and offers panoramic views across the Firth of Forth. The venue has been renovated to provide a fully equipped teaching kitchen alongside a demonstration theatre, with capacity for 50 and a function room, which presents the ideal dining setting for corporate entertainment or team building. The building is also suitable for PR events and product launches. The range of facilities on offer allows the school to host a broad spectrum of cookery courses and activities.
