This is suitable for beginners looking to get started in sewing, providing the opportunity to get all the answers you need. It’s a great way to get a feel for your sewing machine, troubleshoot any problems you’re having with your current project in an easy, direct way or learn about features you’re not as confident with yet.

During the booking process, you’ll have the opportunity to let your Colleague know what you would like to focus on during the session. They’ll be able to prepare for a personalised workshop that answers all of your questions.

You’re sure to walk away a sewing pro, ready to take your designs to a new level!

*Please note that your workshop host will only have access to sewing machines that are currently stocked in Hobbycraft stores.

**Children 12 years and over can book onto this workshop but please note all children under the age of 18 will need parental/guardian supervision for the duration of the workshop.

Bring a friend: You can now use the £5 add-on feature at checkout to invite a friend along with you, whether you’re working on a project together or you’d simply prefer having some company during the session. Your friend can enjoy any demonstrations given, and they are free to ask questions, but they will not receive the same practical, direct one-to-one support as is offered to the lead participant.

Keeping everyone safe

At Hobbycraft, we want our workshops to be enjoyable, inclusive, and safe for everyone. Some workshops are suitable for children, and where this is the case, a parent or legal guardian is responsible for supervising their child at all times unless the workshop is clearly stated as suitable for independent attendance. Our colleagues and instructors are there to guide the activity and support a safe environment, and if any concerns about safety or wellbeing arise during a workshop, these should be raised with a member of staff straight away.

  • 5/5 from Heather Bridges, attended Sep 2026: This was a lovely workshop for my teenage daughter. She was taught quite a lot that will hopefully stay in her mind to help her make lots of things on her sewing machine. She is now very keen to get started so thank you very much.
  • 5/5 from Leanne Martin, attended Aug 2026: I found the class easy to follow. It has helped me understand my own sewing machine and given me lots of ideas how to use it for my needs. The teacher was amazing and moved at my pace. I have managed to use my knowledge from the class to sew my own bow. I have attached a picture of the first thing I have made on my machine
  • 5/5 from Deborah Cleverley, attended Jul 2026: After watching the TV programme The Great British Sewing Bee, I decided I would like to try my hand at sewing and booked a one to one sewing class via Hobbycraft. I attended the class today and my teacher was Liz. Liz was very knowledgeable and patient. I purchased a Hobbycraft 19s sewing machine and she showed me step by step how to thread the machine, thread the bobbin and change the different feet explaining what they were used for. Liz explained and demonstrated each stitch and what they would achieve, including the stretch stitches and then allowed me to practice each stage she taught me. Liz also advised that I was able to do embroidery patterns using this machine. When the session ended Liz showed me the products that I could purchase, ie: new bobbins, needles, cotton, embroidery cotton etc. I was very happy with the class tutorial and left feeling confident and looking forward to practicing and hopefully making some nice items.
  • 5/5 from Yasmin Kyle, attended May 2026: Liz was great, learnt how to set up the sewing machine, how to make a button hole, attach a zip, and hem the edges she also talked me through the different settings on the machine how to change the needle and bobbin and what to do if ur thread ever gets stuck top tips would be to take a pen and make notes off anything important you think you might forget. I felt like there was a lot to take in as a beginner i wish i had more time to stay and practice as i felt like the time went very quickly. I will be booking another one to one lesson for sure aswell as practising at home. Strongly recommend this class for anyone who wants to learn or has a project that need advice. Thankyou Hobbycraft & Thankyou Liz. Happy returning customer.
  • 5/5 from Julie Nicholson, attended Mar 2026: Liz is a great teacher. Knowledgeable and patient! Had a great time and left with lots more knowledge. I'll be back (as the booking system forgot to book my second class! And because Liz is still good!)
  • 5/5 from Nicholas Fox, attended Mar 2026: Liz was professional, knowledgeable and patient with my son and me today. She tought us basics and helped us choose the sewing machine right for us, thank you
  • 5/5 from Claire Thomas, attended Mar 2026: I wanted to have a revision on how to set up a sewing machine and to use different stitches. My teacher Liz was lovely, kind and friendly. She was very well informed and showed me the steps as many times as I needed. I left feeling confident for what I wanted to make at home. I just wish the workshop was longer, an hour didn’t feel long enough.
  • 5/5 from Janet Little, attended Jan 2026: I enjoyed my sewing session and will be booking another class for more lessons
  • 5/5 from Martha, attended Jan 2026: The sewing machine one-to-one was great for learning how use my sewing machine. Liz was really lovely and really helpful. Will probably go back for more when I want to learn new skills. It was great to get sewing!
  • 5/5 from Patricia Brian, attended Oct 2025: The teacher was very pleasant; she was brlliant! I enjoyed the experience very much. However I would have liked to have had the mechanism of a sewing machine, its capabilities, its limited uses to have been explained prior to the lesson starting but do understand there is a time restraint.
  • 5/5 from Amber, attended Oct 2025: Had a brilliant 1-1 sewing workshop with Bonnie at WWX. I was quite nervous as I went there with basically no knowledge, though she was so patient and a great tutor. So glad I went as I can now start to look at little sewing projects. Thanks again
  • 4/5 from Emma Moat, attended Oct 2025: Lovely lady, very helpful and knowledable. Setting could improve, I cannot sit on a hard metal chair but the instructor folded up a blanket for me to make it easier. Staff generally could probably benefit from good training to understand Neurodivergent people. Some of the language was upsetting. Having said that, the instructor was patient, and I would book again with them.
  • 5/5 from Louise Crowe, attended Sep 2025: Liz was brilliant! So calm and patient and explained everything really well. I went home and set up my sewing machine and spent the afternoon sewing.
  • 5/5 from Heather Munnings, attended Sep 2025: I thoroughly enjoyed this workshop. Liz was friendly and knowledgable. She showed me what different stitches were used for and how to use the sewing machine, despite not having the same machine as mine she was able to make it relevant. I learned so much in just an hour which I will definitly be able to use going forward
  • 5/5 from Janet Little, attended Aug 2025: I did sewing machine Class and it was great It covered everything I needed to know
  • 5/5 from Lucy Wallis, attended Aug 2025: Liz is very patient and helpful. I really enjoyed the lesson!
  • 5/5 from Carole Lane, attended Aug 2025: Teacher Liz was very good. When I booked the course the hobbycraft machine I bought is not listed so had to choose another one from the list which is pointless. Also told not to bring your own machine. We muddled through, Liz and her supervisor managed to sort things out. Westwood Cross store, Broadstairs
  • 5/5 from Jennie Hills, attended May 2025: I had a demonstration on how to use my new sewing machine. Liz was amazing, explained everything to me and got me started straight away on the machine. I learnt some very useful tips.
  • 5/5 from Len Clark, attended Mar 2025: How to use the sewing machine Friendly and informative That's all for now Bye
  • 5/5 from Liz Addison, attended Jan 2025: I booked the workshop to learn how to use my new sewing machine. Liz my instructor was extremely helpful and knowledgeable and talked me through all functions and tasks, demonstrating along the way and giving me tasks to complete. I learned all functions of my sewing machine and several useful techniques too.
  • 4/5 from Daniel, attended Jan 2025: I booked this class for my fiancée and joined her to observe and perhaps learn something myself. Upon arrival at the venue, we were surprised to find that they weren’t fully prepared for us. The machine they had ready wasn’t the one I specified in the questionnaire during booking, and the correct one was missing a crucial piece, making it impossible to proceed with the class as planned. Thankfully, the instructor was resourceful and determined to find a solution. He managed to get the correct machine working by using a part from another, somewhat compatible machine. While this initial hiccup might deter some people, I’m inclined to believe it was a one-time issue. The class itself was excellent. The instructor was thorough in explaining the basics of sewing and patiently answered all our questions. He demonstrated techniques clearly and ensured we had ample opportunities to practice and learn. By the end of the session, he even provided us with some "homework" and generously gave us free fabric to practice with at home.
  • 5/5 from Karuna Chandru, attended Nov 2024: Ms Liz is superb the way she teaches and my daughter is too happy thisis her 2bd class with her.. thank u.. Keep the great work going...thank u
  • 5/5 from Ashleigh Dixon, attended Oct 2024: Very knowledgable teacher. She was extremely helpful and patient. Class was very good value for money.
  • 5/5 from Jasmin Holly Thorne, attended Oct 2024: Really good lesson! I learnt about the machine and I was also taught how to take up trousers that was my main aim. After I went home and took up two pairs of jean’s successfully ️
  • 5/5 from Jessica Emerson, attended Aug 2024: I booked to set up my new sewing machine. Being dyslexic the instructions where quite over whelming and I'd say not user friendly. So I booked in, Stuart was absolutely fantastic, he explained everything so well. He was very accommodating of making sure I understood everything, and was constantly asking if I wanted to ask any questions or go over anything again. I was happy, comfortable and relaxed the whole session. We set up the machine, I had practice time and he ran me through "issues" and how to fix them if I come across them at home. I walked out feeling so happy, accomplished and most of all with a fully set up sewing machine and the knowledge to start creating. Brilliant session, so worth the £.
  • 5/5 from Corinne Marchant, attended Apr 2024: I learnt to prepare the sewing machine to make a garment, as a beginner. It was very informative and the teacher was very patient and knowledgeable. It was great having the 1-1 basis.
  • 5/5 from Sharon Pullen, attended Mar 2024: I had a 1 to 1 session today with my sewing machine. Liz was excellent and I feel a lot more confident in using the machine now. She was very patient with me as I am a novice. Really recommend booking on these.
  • 5/5 from Lesley Condon, attended Jan 2024: Liz was a first class instructor, helpful and encouraging. She demonstrated the machine and it’s capabilities. Showed the how to …. then watched carefully as I tried it out. The venue corner was perfect for quiet instruction. My interest in using my new sewing machine was for hem alterations initially. I was given various pieces of material to practise on which I might encounter, and the right stitch to get the best result. Thank you for an extremely informative and well run session.
  • 5/5 from Brian, attended Jan 2024: Lisa was an excellent teacher very knowledgeable. Helped immensely as I had never used a sewing machine.
  • 5/5 from Lucy Caterer Class For Emily Caterer, attended Dec 2023: Stuart at Thanet was very helpful describing everything clearly. He makes people feel welcome and comfortable during their lesson. I felt I learnt alot in the hour and would definitely recommend for anyone with a new machine or who would like to learn a certain element as Stuart is very enthusiastic and knowledgeable.
  • 5/5 from Ruth, attended Nov 2023: Today I learned how to use a sewing machine for the first time. My teacher, Liz was amazing. Giving me full access to the machine. She provided all the materials I needed for my lesson and allowed me to take everything home. The area we used was semi private and clean. Even though her shift was over after my lesson she stayed with me to help with my purchases and answered my questions and also explained other items I may need to help with my sewing machine purchase. I will certainly make use of other 1-2-1 sessions in the future.
  • 3/5 from Anonymised ClassBento customer, attended Nov 2023: I was asked if I’d brought my machine to the lesson, but had an email specifically telling me not to, (the manager seemed familiar with this happening), so time was wasted setting up a machine & I was treated like a slap-dash pupil for arriving without my machine. Perhaps the aims of my lesson, which were noted alongside my lesson booking, were not conveyed to my instructor because I was treated as a complete beginner. I was not asked what my experience level was. I was taught how to thread a machine & bobbin, despite having said I’ve sewn several garments & already know that. I was taught the different functions of the machine until I repeated that my machine is different & asked them to stop as it was confusing me, continuing to be shown functions on an entirely different machine to mine. I said I wanted advice on sewing concealed zips better, was told everyone finds them difficult & was shown how to sew regular zips instead - that was good, though rudimentary & not what I asked for. I didn’t feel listened to at all, & didn’t achieve what I booked my lesson for. Listening to the pupil at the beginning of the lesson, to ascertain their experience level & lesson requirements would be helpful. The instructor was very mindful of the time, which was professional, & spent a few minutes afterwards showing me different material & zips, which was nice. All in all, the instructor seemed very well suited to giving a beginner lesson.
