Welcome & Introduction

Welcome & Introduction

Escape the city and step into our tranquil canalside studio in Alperton, NW London . A calm, plant-filled space overlooking the Grand Union Canal. We'll welcome you with a warm hello, show you around, and get you settled in. From the moment you walk in, the city quiets down.

Introduction to Pottery

Introduction to Pottery

Your tutor walks you through the journey ahead: how clay behaves, what wheel throwing and hand building actually feel like, the materials you'll work with, and the glaze options waiting for you at the end. No prior knowledge needed ,you'll leave knowing more about ceramics than 99% of people.

Wheel-Throwing Session

Wheel-Throwing Session

Now the fun begins. Sit at the wheel, plant your hands in cool, wet clay, and learn to centre, open and pull your first pot. Your tutor will be right beside you, guiding, correcting, encouraging. Most people are shocked at how quickly the wheel starts to feel intuitive.

Hand-Building Session

Hand-Building Session

Step away from the wheel and explore pottery's older, slower art. Through pinching, slab-building and coiling, you'll shape clay entirely with your hands, no spinning, no rush. It's where pottery feels most meditative.

Decorating Your Pieces

Decorating Your Pieces

Time to make it yours. Add texture with carving tools, brush on colour with underglaze, or experiment with patterns and personal touches. Whatever you make, it will be unmistakably yours.

Finishing & Glazing Option

Finishing & Glazing Option

Choose any pieces you'd like to keep and we'll glaze and kiln-fire them for £6 each. You'll be notified when they're ready , usually about 4 weeks later at which point you'll have a beautiful, finished, functional piece of pottery that you made with your own hands.

Join this beginner-friendly pottery taster class in North West London and find a calm, plant-filled retreat away from the rush of the city. Set right on the Grand Union Canal at The Slightly Curious Studio, this workshop is the perfect way to spend a few hours whether you're planning a unique date, celebrating a birthday, or finally ticking "learn to throw a pot" off your bucket list.
Over three hours, you'll get hands-on with the full pottery experience. You'll move through three distinct areas of the craft:
  • Wheel throwing – Master the basics of shaping clay on the potter's wheel with expert guidance.
  • Hand building – Learn how to pinch and coil your way to a unique creation.
  • Decoration – Add those final personal touches to your work before it's ready for the kiln.
There's no need to feel any creative anxiety; our tutors have been teaching for years and keep groups small so you'll get plenty of personal attention. We'll have everything set up for you – including the clay, tools, and aprons – so you can simply show up and enjoy the friendly, low-pressure atmosphere.
You'll finish your London pottery session with a newfound sense of confidence and a piece or two of your own work to collect once they've been fired and glazed. It's a wonderful opportunity to switch off and enjoy the rewarding feeling of creating something beautiful from scratch.

FAQ

Is there parking available?
Yes. You have a couple of options: Free on-street parking on Carlyon Road (a few minutes’ walk from the studio) — available on weekends and non-event days. Sainsbury’s Alperton pay & display ( directly opposite the studio ) bookable via justpark.
What will I make?
All material included . You’ll try hand building and wheel throwing. You can combine techniques, and make as many pieces as you can within the time.
Can I take my pottery home the same day?
Clay needs time to dry and be fired in the kiln. If you’d like your piece glazed and fired, it costs £6 per item and will be ready to collect in about 4 weeks.
See more FAQs
How do I collect my finished work?
When your piece is ready (around 4 weeks), you’ll get an email. You can then come back to the studio to collect it or have them delivered.
What if I just want the experience, not the pottery?
That’s fine! The £60 class gives you the full pottery experience without keeping a piece.

Yes, the workshop is suitable for ages 5 and up.
Can I book as a gift?
Absolutely! This workshop makes a unique gift for birthdays, anniversaries, or just because.

Sampada is a lovely teacher - patient and calm. She guided us expertly through the necessary movements with the clay. We can’t wait to collect our pots once they have been glazed and fired in the kiln. I have already recommended the Slightly Curious Studio experience to family and friends. Heather & Brian
  • 5/5 from Dominika Eszes, attended Sep 2026: I went to try pottery with my friend and it was a wonderful experience your teacher Sampada was lovely, knowledgable and supportive and the world of the clay definitely worth returning to. Highly recommend if you need an escape away from the rush to reset and focus and immerse in the world of clay and the art behind it. Definitely will be back for more classes.

  • 5/5 from Andrii Diazhuk, attended Sep 2026: We had such a wonderful experience at this pottery studio! We came to make our own clay pieces and try pottery on the wheel, and we absolutely loved it. The studio itself is such a pleasant and welcoming place. The atmosphere is relaxed, creative, and very comfortable, which makes it easy to enjoy the process even if you have never worked with clay before. A special thank you to our instructor, who was absolutely fantastic. They were friendly, patient, attentive, and explained everything clearly. We felt very well looked after and were able to enjoy the experience without feeling any pressure. It was great fun getting our hands dirty and seeing how the clay slowly turned into something we had made ourselves! We really enjoyed both the creative process and the atmosphere of the studio. It was a great experience from beginning to end, and we would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for something fun, relaxing, and a little different to do. We will definitely be coming back again. Thank you for such a lovely experience!

  • 5/5 from Deepanshu Nambiar, attended Aug 2026: Booked this as a couple's activity and it was a brilliant experience from start to finish. Communication beforehand was excellent - clear directions made the place easy to find, which is always appreciated. Sampada was a wonderful host and teacher. She made us feel welcome straight away (water on arrival was a nice touch) and struck exactly the right balance of guidance: enough hands-on help that we both came away with pottery we're genuinely proud of, but not so much that it felt like she'd made it for us. That sense of achievement is a big part of what made the session so enjoyable. She was really personable and warm. The workshop space itself is lovely, with canal views that add a lot to the atmosphere. An excellent introduction to both wheel throwing and hand building - highly recommended whether you're looking for a date activity or just want to try something new.

  • 5/5 from Andy Pierce, attended May 2026: It was a great opportunity to spend special time with my lovely friend Lindsey doing something fun. I’ve always wanted to learn to use the potters wheel having had disastrous experience in the past! Sampada was absolutely brilliant as a teacher and boosted my confidence no end. I now feel I can develop what I’ve learnt today on the potters wheel and experience will help me to get great results. I managed to make two pots and a slab pot with a face decoration and wood grain effect. The atmosphere was lovely. It was quite mixed with young children young teens and adults. The pace was just perfect not too fast not too slow but you do have to stay present or you’ll miss something vital! Sampada and her colleague were very helpful throughout the whole process. A most enjoyable day and I thoroughlyrecommend it.
  • 5/5 from Cham Sandhu, attended May 2026: A very hands on class, wheel throwing was so much fun and really enjoyed the pace at which the class was run. It’s actually difficult than it looks, so a really enjoyable and challenging experience.
  • 5/5 from Jayshree Shah, attended May 2026: Fantastic class and great introduction to wheel throwing. Techniques and steps really well explained
  • 5/5 from Genevieve Case, attended May 2026: I was very lucky to be the only one student. So I had one to one tuition which help me to create the item I had in mind and quite a big item. My teacher, even though she thought it was ambitious, helped me all the way to create it. She was very encouraging and patient and very skills to show me different ways to build the walls of my cylinder straight and of the right thickness until I suceeded to build the right shape at the right height. The hand building afterwards was easier but needed a different skill to make sure all the bits stay stuck together during the firing process which I learn with my very lovely, patient and calm teacher. Overall it was a very intense learning experience but it was so fulfilling to leave after achieving what I really wanted to create. It was a very uplifting experience thanks to my great teacher.

Hi, I'm Sampada Gurung founder of The Slightly Curious Studio, a small canal-side pottery studio in Alperton, NW London.
I'm originally from Nepal. I studied illustration at Falmouth University and after graduating I found myself increasingly drawn to clay. The pull was strong enough that in 2019 I opened my own studio, not as a serious "career pivot, " but because I wanted a space where anyone curious about pottery could come and try it without feeling intimidated. That's still the whole point of the studio. Feed the curiosity, and creativity follows.
What I love about teaching pottery is watching people who arrive nervous "I'll be terrible at this, I promise" leave proud of a wonky little bowl they made themselves. Pottery is brilliantly humbling. It doesn't care about your job title, your follower count, or what you've achieved this week. The clay only responds to attention. I love being the person who's there when someone realises they can do something they didn't think they could.
A few things that might be useful to know:
I was a contestant on Channel 4's The Great Pottery Throw Down (Series 3) — equal parts terrifying and incredible. My work crosses illustration and ceramics: I trained as an illustrator at Falmouth, and my drawing background still shapes the forms and surfaces I make. Everything I show you in class is something I'd be making myself if you weren't here.
My studio is right beside the Grand Union Canal — light, plant-filled, the opposite of a stressful weekday. I cap classes at 6–12 students so you get hands-on guidance, not a crowd to compete with.
Since opening in 2019 I've been lucky enough to host thousands of Londoners beginner workshops, 5-week wheel courses, hen parties, corporate days, gifts, first dates that became second dates. Across Google, ClassBento and Airbnb we've earned 630+ five-star reviews, which still surprises me every time.
If you've watched Pottery Throw Down and thought "I'd like to try that, " or you're just curious about clay and want a screen-free day come and have a go. No experience needed. Just curiosity.
