Introduction to Pottery

Introduction to Pottery

Your tutor walks you through the journey ahead: how clay behaves, what wheel throwing and hand building actually feel like, the materials you'll work with, and the glaze options waiting for you at the end. No prior knowledge needed ,you'll leave knowing more about ceramics than 99% of people.

Wheel-Throwing Session

Wheel-Throwing Session

Now the fun begins. Sit at the wheel, plant your hands in cool, wet clay, and learn to centre, open and pull your first pot. Your tutor will be right beside you, guiding, correcting, encouraging. Most people are shocked at how quickly the wheel starts to feel intuitive.

Hand-Building Session

Hand-Building Session

Step away from the wheel and explore pottery's older, slower art. Through pinching, slab-building and coiling, you'll shape clay entirely with your hands, no spinning, no rush. It's where pottery feels most meditative.

Decorating Your Pieces

Decorating Your Pieces

Time to make it yours. Add texture with carving tools, brush on colour with underglaze, or experiment with patterns and personal touches. Whatever you make, it will be unmistakably yours.

Finishing & Glazing Option

Finishing & Glazing Option

Choose any pieces you'd like to keep and we'll glaze and kiln-fire them for £6 each. You'll be notified when they're ready , usually about 4 weeks later at which point you'll have a beautiful, finished, functional piece of pottery that you made with your own hands.

Join this beginner-friendly pottery taster class in North West London and find a calm, plant-filled retreat away from the rush of the city. Set right on the Grand Union Canal at The Slightly Curious Studio, this workshop is the perfect way to spend a few hours whether you're planning a unique date, celebrating a birthday, or finally ticking "learn to throw a pot" off your bucket list.
Over three hours, you'll get hands-on with the full pottery experience. You'll move through three distinct areas of the craft:
  • Wheel throwing – Master the basics of shaping clay on the potter's wheel with expert guidance.
  • Hand building – Learn how to pinch and coil your way to a unique creation.
  • Decoration – Add those final personal touches to your work before it's ready for the kiln.
There's no need to feel any creative anxiety; our tutors have been teaching for years and keep groups small so you'll get plenty of personal attention. We'll have everything set up for you – including the clay, tools, and aprons – so you can simply show up and enjoy the friendly, low-pressure atmosphere.
You'll finish your London pottery session with a newfound sense of confidence and a piece or two of your own work to collect once they've been fired and glazed. It's a wonderful opportunity to switch off and enjoy the rewarding feeling of creating something beautiful from scratch.

Hi, I'm Sampada Gurung founder of The Slightly Curious Studio, a small canal-side pottery studio in Alperton, NW London.
I'm originally from Nepal. I studied illustration at Falmouth University and after graduating I found myself increasingly drawn to clay. The pull was strong enough that in 2019 I opened my own studio, not as a serious "career pivot, " but because I wanted a space where anyone curious about pottery could come and try it without feeling intimidated. That's still the whole point of the studio. Feed the curiosity, and creativity follows.
What I love about teaching pottery is watching people who arrive nervous "I'll be terrible at this, I promise" leave proud of a wonky little bowl they made themselves. Pottery is brilliantly humbling. It doesn't care about your job title, your follower count, or what you've achieved this week. The clay only responds to attention. I love being the person who's there when someone realises they can do something they didn't think they could.
A few things that might be useful to know:
I was a contestant on Channel 4's The Great Pottery Throw Down (Series 3) — equal parts terrifying and incredible. My work crosses illustration and ceramics: I trained as an illustrator at Falmouth, and my drawing background still shapes the forms and surfaces I make. Everything I show you in class is something I'd be making myself if you weren't here.
My studio is right beside the Grand Union Canal — light, plant-filled, the opposite of a stressful weekday. I cap classes at 6–12 students so you get hands-on guidance, not a crowd to compete with.
Since opening in 2019 I've been lucky enough to host thousands of Londoners beginner workshops, 5-week wheel courses, hen parties, corporate days, gifts, first dates that became second dates. Across Google, ClassBento and Airbnb we've earned 630+ five-star reviews, which still surprises me every time.
If you've watched Pottery Throw Down and thought "I'd like to try that, " or you're just curious about clay and want a screen-free day come and have a go. No experience needed. Just curiosity.
