What you'll do

During this two-hour class, you'll gain insights into clay preparation, explore various tools used in pottery, and master the basics of crafting a simple cylinder shape on a potter's wheel.
This standalone session is a fantastic way to explore a new creative outlet while having a blast! You'll have the chance to experience the thrill of working on a potter's wheel and acquire fundamental techniques. It's an ideal primer for the world of ceramics and serves as an excellent stepping stone if you're considering a more extensive, immersive course in future.

If you can spare an additional hour or two, you can even decorate your creations at once, with the convenience of picking them up later. For those with busy schedules, you can arrange a follow-up session with Mihaly for decorating and glazing. And the best part? The cost of £60 covers the entire experience, ensuring you have everything you need to embark on this pottery adventure.

Knowledge required

Beginner-friendly and suitable for children aged six and above. Please note that children must have an adult present. If your children will learn pottery and you will be there to supervise, you only need to purchase one ticket. Please always mention at booking if it's for your child.

Please note:
It is easier to do pottery with shorter nails because you need to use your fingertips throughout the process. If possible, please arrive with shorter nails so you can use your fingertips fully. Thank you!

This class is great for individuals and couples as well as for a team building activity, Christmas party, birthday or hen do.

Suitable for adults, and kids (minimum 6 years old).

An adult must accompany any attending kids. The adult may observe at the class for free.

My name is Mihaly Herczeg and I am an entrepreneur, maker, who likes experiments and challenges at the same time. I fell in love with clay, especially with porcelain when I started to learn throwing.
After years of practicing and playing, I designed and made all of the tableware in my restaurant, at The Rosemary. Throwing is like being in your self-made world. I realised that many people would like to have this experience with the clay. I have started to teach during the pandemic and I enjoyed that as much as the throwing itself.
I can offer a taster session or a beginner course, which includes 4lessons and takes you through making basic shapes, finishing, glazing and firing too. My classes are different than others because is a small class with max. 7 people and I can give you all the help, tips, correcting mistakes, what I made before (for example: breathing well is crucial at throwing). Also, if you sign up for any of my classes, you will be a part of the thrower students online hub, which can help you to be motivated, inspired and following each other progress.

The environment is lovely and relaxed, whilst we painted Mihaly even gave us some hungarian wine to celebrate my boyfriend's birthday. Came here for my sisters birthday and had a great time! Mihaly was very hospitable and was a great teacher.
The venue was easy to find and close to the station, and there were only 5 students which made it feel like a private class and were able to get help when needed.
We even stayed a bit after to decorate our pieces.

This class was a surprise present for my mum. We had a great time in Mihaly's studio hidden at the back of a Hungarian restaurant. The class felt very personal as there was only 4 of us there, so for absolute beginners like us we felt like we had ample opportunity for some one-to-one teaching and were able to ask questions and for help freely. In our two hour class we were able to make 4 pots and were able to decorate them too! I cannot wait to pick up the final products once they are fired. There were plenty of tools to use and a potter's wheel each. This was a great experience and it has opened the door to commit to more lengthy pottery courses in the future. Me and my mum highly recommend!

I took my boyfriend to a private class for the two of us for his birthday. Neither of us had tried throwing before, but Mihaly explained everything so carefully, helping us improve through the lesson.
The classes take place at Mihaly's restaurant, so we stayed there for food afterwards and OMG, it was absolutely amazing! We're excited to go back to paint and glaze our creations + to enjoy a delicious meal again!
The space also has a lot of charm, beautifully decorated with lots of plants and bits of pottery everywhere, and everyone was nice and friendly.

Highly recommend booking this pottery class. Had an extremely fun time, Mihály was very entertaining and a great host! He had a lot of passion for teaching us properly and for the art.

We arrived late due to rail strikes, however we were given the time required to make the 5 objects as per the class and additionally the option to return to decorate the items when they were ready - for free.

The teacher did a demo first while explaining all the steps and then I had the opportunity to practise while the teacher corrected and explained the reasons of each step
I managed to have 5 pieces prepared
The venue was great, in a calm area … I had the 10-12 slot on Tuesday which was great
I am coming back to do the glazing after the pieces are fired and so looking forward to it

I recently attended a one-day pottery class with instructor By Mihaly Herczeg at 178 New cross gate, and I have to say it was a truly wonderful experience. What I loved about the class was the hands-on approach. We were each given our own clay and instructed to make a small bowl. Mihaly provided clear and concise instructions throughout the process and gave us tips on achieving the desired results.
Overall, I had a fantastic time and felt like I got my money's worth. The two hours flew by so quickly, and I left the class feeling accomplished and excited to continue exploring pottery.
