5.0 (77)My name is Mihaly Herczeg and I am an entrepreneur, maker, who likes experiments and challenges at the same time. I fell in love with clay, especially with porcelain when I started to learn throwing.
After years of practicing and playing, I designed and made all of the tableware in my restaurant, at The Rosemary. Throwing is like being in your self-made world. I realised that many people would like to have this experience with the clay. I have started to teach during the pandemic and I enjoyed that as much as the throwing itself.
I can offer a taster session or a beginner course, which includes 4lessons and takes you through making basic shapes, finishing, glazing and firing too. My classes are different than others because is a small class with max. 7 people and I can give you all the help, tips, correcting mistakes, what I made before (for example: breathing well is crucial at throwing). Also, if you sign up for any of my classes, you will be a part of the thrower students online hub, which can help you to be motivated, inspired and following each other progress.
As both a teacher and studio owner, it's crucial for me to provide young pottery artists with opportunities to gain practical teaching experience. That's why, in January, I welcomed Jago Rushton, a Cornish Ceramic Designer studying at Central Saint Martins School of Art, to join my studio. Inspired by Moroccan geometry and ancient Roman and Greek pottery, Jago brings a contemporary flair to his work. His passion lies in sharing his skills and nurturing others' appreciation for this remarkable art form.

First time trying throwing and im glad that it was with Mihaly! I loved the vibes and did quite a lot within the 2 hours. I would now definitely be considering the full course. Enjoyed it a lot.

This was a present for my boyfriend and we finally did it this Saturday - it was wonderful!
The little studio, tucked in the back of a lovely Hungarian Restaurant has a relaxed at-home feel. We came in and got straight to work with Mihaly giving a quick yet instructive intro and all the help and tips we needed along the way.
We both ended up making 6 pieces, which clearly showed our progression as we started to understand how to work the clay. After trying our hands at the wheel we were able to decorate our pieces with paint - we weren't rushed at all and had all the time and creative freedom we needed.
Afterward, we enjoyed a lovely dinner in the Restaurant, which I highly recommend everyone to do. If you're already there you might as well!

Taster class with Mihaly was great! We made 4 little different pots/plates each and painted them as well. The place was gorgeous and all materials were provided, plus excellent coffee!
Mihaly was fun and gave us many good tips. He was also very patient explaining the processes of how to throw on the wheel. Highly recommend it!

Booked in for my partner and our friend as a Christmas activity, having had Mihaly’s classes recommended to us, and we could not recommend this more! Our first experience doing pottery an Mihaly was an incredibly warm, patient teacher. The time flew by - we were able to decorate our pots afterwards. Was a really fun and therapeutic experience and we’d love to do it again. Also worth noting the pottery studio is connected to the Hungarian restaurant Mihaly owns - the food was incredible, so definitely make time to share a delicious meal before or after your class.

Lovely afternoon trying out Raku techniques. Mihaly let us experiment freely - it was an absolute pleasure to work in his studio and learn more about his experience with ceramics. I am certain I will be back to learn more!

Venue is fab, it's his restaurant where he has many of his own creations on display. His explanations were great and we got right into throwing the clay within 10 minutes. I made 5 items and painted them all. Lovely guy, really calm atmosphere and great coffee! Thank you!

Overall a great experience! I'm considering doing a pottery course and this was the perfect introduction. Mihaly was funny and helpful, so a great teacher, and it was very nice to stay an hour and a half after the alloted time to decorate the 4 pieces I made. Looking forward to picking them up in a couple of weeks, thank you!

Two of us attended Mihaly’s workshop today and we loved it. His teaching style is amazing and lighthearted and the materials provided were plenty for a good practise. The setting is beautiful and so was the goulash we stayed for afterwards!

Came here for my sisters birthday and had a great time! Mihaly was very hospitable and was a great teacher.
The venue was easy to find and close to the station, and there were only 5 students which made it feel like a private class and were able to get help when needed.
We even stayed a bit after to decorate our pieces.
Would definitely recommend coming here!

This class was a surprise present for my mum. We had a great time in Mihaly's studio hidden at the back of a Hungarian restaurant. The class felt very personal as there was only 4 of us there, so for absolute beginners like us we felt like we had ample opportunity for some one-to-one teaching and were able to ask questions and for help freely. In our two hour class we were able to make 4 pots and were able to decorate them too! I cannot wait to pick up the final products once they are fired. There were plenty of tools to use and a potter's wheel each. This was a great experience and it has opened the door to commit to more lengthy pottery courses in the future. Me and my mum highly recommend!

Absolutely lovely class with Mihal! It was our first time with pottery and he continuously guided us through the throwing process. The fact that every single participant had their own pottery wheel made it a great experience, since we didn't have to rush or stress about taking too long with each piece. It was a great experience and I would recommend it for a fun date!

I took my boyfriend to a private class for the two of us for his birthday. Neither of us had tried throwing before, but Mihaly explained everything so carefully, helping us improve through the lesson.
The classes take place at Mihaly's restaurant, so we stayed there for food afterwards and OMG, it was absolutely amazing! We're excited to go back to paint and glaze our creations + to enjoy a delicious meal again!
The space also has a lot of charm, beautifully decorated with lots of plants and bits of pottery everywhere, and everyone was nice and friendly.

Highly recommend booking this pottery class. Had an extremely fun time, Mihály was very entertaining and a great host! He had a lot of passion for teaching us properly and for the art.
We arrived late due to rail strikes, however we were given the time required to make the 5 objects as per the class and additionally the option to return to decorate the items when they were ready - for free.

The teacher did a demo first while explaining all the steps and then I had the opportunity to practise while the teacher corrected and explained the reasons of each step
I managed to have 5 pieces prepared
The venue was great, in a calm area … I had the 10-12 slot on Tuesday which was great
I am coming back to do the glazing after the pieces are fired and so looking forward to it
It is 2 stops from London Bridge so fairly easy to get to

I recently attended a one-day pottery class with instructor By Mihaly Herczeg at 178 New cross gate, and I have to say it was a truly wonderful experience. What I loved about the class was the hands-on approach. We were each given our own clay and instructed to make a small bowl. Mihaly provided clear and concise instructions throughout the process and gave us tips on achieving the desired results.
Overall, I had a fantastic time and felt like I got my money's worth. The two hours flew by so quickly, and I left the class feeling accomplished and excited to continue exploring pottery. I highly recommend this class to anyone interested in learning about pottery or looking for a fun and creative activity. Thank you, Mihaly, for such a wonderful experience!
