Natural Dyeing Workshop: Bundle Dyeing a Bamboo Silk Scarf

Make a beautiful bundle dyed bamboo silk scarf using natural pigments and surplus flowers

2 hours Class size 5 to 30     label £50 (£40 per class surcharge applies for private classes)

Discover the beauty of natural colour using different parts of plants including flowers, leaves and roots as well as food waste and add botanical colours to a handmade bamboo silk scarf in this relaxing and environmentally engaged workshop.

This is a fun, simple, sustainable and economical way to transfer pigments to textiles using botanical colours including food and garden waste. This workshop is ideal for those who are interested in natural dyeing but do not know where to start, and has been specially designed for you to make a present for yourself or a special one ;)

We will create surprising prints and patterns and learn about plant pigments. The nature of this technique makes the outcome quite hard to predict, however you could aim for a blurry and colourful repetitive pattern, or a more abstract colour field. However the outcome, it’s going to be beautiful.

Accessibility

The building is fully accessible, there are ramps and a wheelchair lift.

Knowledge required
This is a family friendly workshop and beginners as well as more experienced participants are welcome to join.

What you'll get
You will go home with a naturally hand dyed (by you) and hand sewn (by me) vegan silk scarf of 40cm by 40cm, plus a lot of tips and tricks on bundle dyeing :)

What to bring
Materials will be provided, but you are welcome to bring some fresh or dried leaves and flowers from your local park or garden to bundle dye with. I would recommend French Marigolds, Cosmos, dark roses, sumac flowers, geraniums or pansies. Onion skins are also a great option, and no worries, your end result scarf won’t be smelly, I promise!

Please bring a small plastic bag to take your damp scarf home.

I am a visual artist and arts educator working with colour, textiles, minerals, clay, seeds, flowers and pigments that I extract from plants around me and nearby.

I specialise in sustainable wellbeing workshops and mindful sessions for community groups, CPD and staff training for small companies and institutions.

I have been working with natural dyes since 2019 and have an extensive experience planning and delivering creative and engaging sustainable workshops for people of all ages and many backgrounds.

I see these experiences as tools for learning but also for grounding and reflection that aim to connect with ourselves and with others in a supportive, non judgemental safe space. Interested in mental health and wellbeing, I nurture environments where people can reach a deeper level of understanding of their feelings and emotions, allowing time for play and exploration with a focus on the process of making and collective learning.
