Learn American Mahjong Workshop

Learn to play American Mahjong at this hands-on workshop at Aldgate Tower, London – whether you're brand new to Mahjong altogether or you already play the Chinese style and are curious how the American version differs.American Mahjong brings its own set of rules and quirks, from the fast-paced Charleston mechanic to reading the National Mah Jongg League card. We've even imported tiles and mats straight from the US, so you'll get the full American look and feel from your very first session.You'll start with the fundamentals – tile recognition, game setup and how the card works – before building up to playing a full game with confidence. No experience is needed, just bring your curiosity. American Mahjong takes a little longer to click than the Chinese version, so we've split the learning into three workshops to help you graduate at a comfortable pace:

• Workshop 1 – How to play a full game
• Workshop 2 – Strategies in different stages
• Workshop 3 – Scoring and being flexible

Once you've covered the basics, you'll get stuck into real games with other players at the table, guided by a friendly instructor who's on hand for questions throughout. If table numbers don't divide evenly on the day, we'll either combine players across tables or teach you the 2- or 3-player variants, so you'll always get plenty of playing time.This is a social game in a social space, so come solo or bring friends and family – you might just leave with a few new Mahjong buddies too. Dear Asia London runs classes and workshops across Asian languages and cultures, building community and celebrating ESEA heritage through food, crafts, language and more.By the end of the three workshops, you'll have the skills and confidence to play American Mahjong start to finish, plus a new hobby and a table of people to enjoy it with.Please note: each attendee needs to be registered with the building in addition to your ClassBento ticket.
