Discover the beautiful Japanese art of Kintsugi by repairing a handmade ceramic pot created by one of our studio potters. In this hands-on workshop, you'll learn traditional-inspired repair techniques and leave with your own unique piece to take home.
Guided by our experienced ceramicists, you'll restore a broken pot using the principles of Kintsugi, celebrating cracks and imperfections rather than hiding them. No previous experience is required, making this a relaxing and rewarding introduction to this timeless craft.
About Kintsugi
Kintsugi (金継ぎ, meaning "golden joinery") is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery by highlighting rather than concealing the cracks. Traditionally, broken pieces are rejoined using lacquer mixed or dusted with precious metals such as gold, silver or platinum.
Beyond its technique, Kintsugi embraces the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi—finding beauty in imperfection—and reflects the idea that damage and repair become part of an object's history rather than something to hide.

Bring Your Own Piece (Optional)
You are welcome to bring your own broken ceramic piece instead of selecting one of ours.
Please note:
* All broken pieces must be present. Unfortunately, we cannot repair ceramics with missing fragments.
* This workshop is designed as a hands-on learning experience, not a professional restoration service. Participants will repair their own pieces under the guidance of our tutors.
* If your ceramic is particularly valuable or has significant sentimental importance, we recommend consulting a professional ceramic conservator or restorer instead.

No prior pottery experience is required. This class is suitable for complete beginners.
Age Requirement
This class is for participants aged 11 years and over. If booking for someone aged 11–17, please read the FAQ session before booking.
Safety
Kintsugi involves handling broken ceramic pieces, which may have sharp edges. Although safety instructions will be provided and every effort will be made to minimise risk, participants should be aware that minor cuts, scratches or bleeding may occur while handling broken ceramics.
By booking a participant aged 11–17, parents or guardians acknowledge these inherent risks and confirm that their child is able to participate safely, handle ceramic pieces responsibly and follow all safety instructions provided by the instructor.
What to bring
  • Fingernails should be kept short for health and safety reasons.
  • Please wear clothes you don't mind getting dirty. Aprons are provided.
  • Please arrive 5 minutes prior to the start of the class, as this will allow you to sign in and not miss any demos.
  • No cancellations or reschedules allowed.
  • Cash or bank information for a transfer on the day to upgrade pieces.

FAQ

What are the age requirements for kids?
Ceramic Studio's Kintsugi workshops are designed primarily for adults but welcome participants aged 11 years and over. Participants under the age of 18 must have a parent or legal guardian complete the booking and accept these Terms & Conditions. Parents or legal guardians must remain on-site for the entire duration of the class. They may either: Book a place and participate in the class alongside their child; or Remain on-site as an observer. Parents or guardians attending as observers must not participate in the class, use studio equipment or materials, or interfere with instruction unless invited to do so by the instructor. Participants aged 11–17 must be well behaved, able to understand and follow instructions, and be capable of working independently in a group setting. The class is taught at an adult pace, and while guidance is provided to all participants, the instructor cannot provide continuous one-to-one supervision or support. Parents or guardians are responsible for ensuring the class is suitable for their child's age, confidence, maturity and ability before booking. The instructor reserves the right to refuse participation or ask a participant to leave if their behaviour, ability to follow instructions, or level of support required significantly affects the safety, learning experience or enjoyment of other participants. In such circumstances, no refund will be provided.

A rare and hidden pottery Eden in the heart of east London, Stoke Newington. Cernamic studio in Stoke Newington was founded, created, and built during the first lockdown of the pandemic, through hard work, blood, sweat, and tears. Nam and Susi two professional ceramicists run this fun and affordable pottery studio open for everyone from all walks of life.
Nam Tran is an award-winning practitioner who gives lectures and demos at universities and exhibits internationally. A ceramic lecturer and head of the departments in design and multi-media with Kensington and Chelsea college. Nam specialises in wheel-thrown raku, bringing years of experience and craftsmanship to every object made.
Tran's work is focused primarily on exploring the physical properties of clay and material experimentation is a strong characteristic of his work. He has been developing making enclosed forms that are much stronger than open forms and therefore resonates well with the alternative firing technique he uses. His work is dominated by thrown pieces that subtly echo the urban roots and conceptual design. Nam Tran first made pots as a teenager on a wheel in his own bedroom and remembers being captivated by the experience. With his unique alternatives methods and approach to ceramics, Nam Tran identifies rules and manipulates and bends them.
