Kintsugi Workshop

An introduction to the techniques of repairing ceramics with gold and bronze for beginners.

2.5 hours Class size 1 to 14 guests

£46 - £55 (Earlybird price of £46 applies if you book into a public session 7+ days ahead)

If you have always loved the principles and aesthetic of Kintsugi repair but haven't had the time to learn or haven't known where to begin, this workshop is for you! Kintsugi, the art of 'golden joinery', originated in Japan and has since been practised and taught for over 600 years. Embracing the tradition of highlighting imperfection instead of disguising it, traditional Kintsugi uses gold and lacquer to mend broken ceramic objects.
This specially designed two-hour taster session, taught in the heart of Stoke Newington, will have you better understanding Kintsugi fundamentals. After this session, you will come away with a beautiful mended object (or two!) which will make a gorgeous keepsake for yourself or a gift for someone you love.
Hosted at The Salvage Company studio, you will be taught by a trained historic crafts conservator with knowledge and experience in both Japanese lacquerware and Kintsugi repair methods. All materials will be supplied, including one piece of reclaimed stoneware or Japanese tea bowl. You can also bring along your own broken piece which we will assess together and then repair if time allows. Time to pull out Grandma's teacup and saucer that you accidentally broke 2 years ago and have been hiding ever since!
For this course, modern repair materials will be used in combination with historic materials for a stunning result. Kintsugi Repair kits will also be available for purchase so that you can continue the practise at home.
Please note:
  • Items repaired in this workshop will not be food safe due to some of the quick-setting materials used and will be primarily for display only.
  • Studio is ground floor and wheelchair accessible.
  • Latecomers of more than 20 minutes will unfortunately not be able to participate in the workshop, and your booking will be forfeited. Please let us know if you are running late so that we can try to accommodate you.

Cody was wonderful - warm, friendly and incredibly knowledgeable. She explained everything so clearly and patiently, and her lovely energy made the whole workshop feel relaxed and welcoming from the start. It was fascinating learning more about the art and philosophy behind kintsugi while actually getting to try it ourselves. Cody created such a positive atmosphere and made the whole experience both fun and meaningful. A really special way to spend a few hours, learn something new and come away with something you’ve made yourself. Thank you, Cody!
  • 5/5 from Dominic Apuzzo, attended Aug 2026: One of the best experiences I’ve had, I bought this for a date and my girlfriend and I absolutely loved it. It was a beautiful space, very cosy and very welcoming! We can’t wait to return!

  • 4/5 from Angela Susan Cross, attended Aug 2026: Great class with a very knowledgable teacher. Very detailed, clear instructions on each step of the process. We were each given a plain white bowl, already broken, to repair. Came away with a completed repaired bowl. It did feel very rushed at the end. Given 4 stars as feel it would be better to have less information about the history of Kintsugi at the beginning and so more time for doing the repairing. Also feel a colourful bowl, rather than white, would be nicer to take home. Overall a good class, lovely teacher, cosy workshop and nice friendly atmosphere.
