Introduction to Green Wood Working Workshop

Discover the timeless craft of green woodworking in this engaging outdoor workshop.This introductory day brings you into the ancient world of green woodworking, specifically green wood carving. Explore the techniques of sawing, splitting and carving, along with bushcraft skills that help us stay outside all day. Focusing on carving specifically, this workshop will give you an understanding of the sculptural nature of carving wood - through carving totems or making decorative objects, using gauges and mallets. This carving day is an opportunity to work on a larger scale, where what is made will be left at The Clearing as legacy or to be passed on to the next carver to work on, becoming a collective woodland project. We will use green wood - wood that is fresh or wood with a high moisture content. This is a beautiful and easy way to carve wood.At our purpose-built woodland site, "The Clearing", nestled within the historic Lesnes Abbey Woods in South East London.Our thoughtfully designed space features a protective parachute canopy and welcoming central fire, ensuring comfort throughout the seasons. The crackling flames keep the kettle perpetually bubbling, offering warming drinks while you work in our natural studio.This enriching activity connects you deeply with ancient crafting traditions, teaching you to understand wood in its most natural state. As you work with your hands in our urban woodland haven, you'll gain both practical skills and a profound appreciation for this traditional craft.
