What you'll do

Discover the timeless craft of green woodworking in this engaging outdoor workshop.

This introductory day brings you into the ancient world of green woodworking, specifically green wood carving.

Explore the techniques of sawing, splitting and carving, along with bushcraft skills that help us stay outside all day. Focusing on carving specifically, this workshop will give you an understanding of the sculptural nature of carving wood - through carving totems or making decorative objects, using gauges and mallets. This carving day is an opportunity to work on a larger scale, where what is made will be left at The Clearing as legacy or to be passed on to the next carver to work on, becoming a collective woodland project.

We will use green wood - wood that is fresh or wood with a high moisture content. This is a beautiful and easy way to carve wood.

At our purpose-built woodland site, "The Clearing", nestled within the historic Lesnes Abbey Woods in South East London.

Our thoughtfully designed space features a protective parachute canopy and welcoming central fire, ensuring comfort throughout the seasons. The crackling flames keep the kettle perpetually bubbling, offering warming drinks while you work in our natural studio.

This enriching activity connects you deeply with ancient crafting traditions, teaching you to understand wood in its most natural state. As you work with your hands in our urban woodland haven, you'll gain both practical skills and a profound appreciation for this traditional craft. All tools and materials are supplied and at the end of the session you will have practiced a variety of carving methods, contributing to collective carving at the site.

Knowledge required

This is for beginners and requires no prior knowledge, just a desire to engage in ancient knowledge.

Suitable for

This class is great for individuals and couples as well as for a date idea, team building activity, Christmas party, birthday or hen do.

Suitable for adults, and kids (minimum 8 years old).

An adult must accompany any attending kids, and must pay for a separate ticket.

This experience would also be a unique gift for her, gift for mum, Xmas gift or gift for couples.

We are a nonprofit organisation based in SE London, offering wellbeing and bushcraft opportunities, we can be found in two locations, the first is our indoor space we call Creative Nature HQ located at Thames-side-studios by the river Thames and the second space is called The Clearing, an outdoor space set in the woods at Lesnes Abbey Woods.

We began in 2016, exploring an alternative way to express our creativity that looked to develop deeper connections with nature within the city. At the centre of our practice is love, generosity, humour, connection and balance. For us this is a daily practice, and we have been co creating opportunities for people to join us and experience it for themselves.

We work all year round outside in the woods and have created a space that has reached a new chapter in our story. The Clearing has taken us four years to vision, build, develop relationships with Bexley Council the land managers, fundraise, design, gain permissions and finally we opened this space September 2024! A real milestone for a tiny organisation of one paid member of staff and a beautiful network of volunteers and supporters.

Our vision holder and navigator of this organisation is Stephen Stockbridge, an artist with over 35 years of experience, building, making and creating both permanent and temporary work that has engaged and delighted participants, here and around the world.

We invite you to go beyond the transactional society we move in every day and ask you to step into a more open hearted playful space where learning and joy is as easy as breathing.
