Level 3
Saturday 2 Week Class
Embark on an exciting adventure in our 'Introduction to garment making class'. During these 2 days, you will discover how to read a pattern, master the art of laying out and cutting fabric (all of which will be provided), and learn how to assemble a basic skirt. You will bring home a toile, also known as a mock-up, crafted from beginner-friendly calico fabric.
New to garment making? Don't worry! Our class is designed to ease any worries or uncertainties you may have. Throughout the session, you can expect a supportive environment where you can learn at your own pace.
Here is a brief overview of what to expect:
  • Introduction to reading a sewing pattern
  • Learn the proper techniques for laying out and cutting fabrics
  • Work with beginner-friendly calico fabric for your mock-up
  • Learn how to install a fly zipper
  • Inserting integrated and patch pockets
  • Learning how to do a buttonhole!
The point of this class is not to create a Garment to wear, but to use this piece as a practice, where you'll learn multiple skills that will help you on your journey. I know a few people that scoff at the thought of making a skirt, as its not something they would wear, but those people are missing the opportunity to learn that this class would give them.

Please note: Public dates for this class require at least 3 guests to run. In the unlikely event that we don't reach this number, we may cancel the session; if that happens, we'll inform you and let you choose between a refund or reschedule, so please watch your email/SMS one day prior to the class.
What you'll get
  • Janome sewing machines to work on!
  • A completed garment.
  • All other materials, tools and our supportive guidance!

Based in the West of Edinburgh in the recently redeveloped Riverside House by Wasps Studios. *Sew Gallus* is a combination of my two favourite words, 'Sewing' of which I have 20 years experience and 'Gallus' an excellent Scots word that often describes someone that is bold, fierce or daring. Something I was called as a child and was often discouraged from being.
I’m Cerri McKenzie, I've been teaching throughout Edinburgh for nearly 5 years now, in many roles from beginners to garment making and upcycling. I've discovered a real passion for helping people on their sewing journeys and now I'm excited to be starting my own workshops.
Outwith the teaching circle I have worked doing costume/work in Tv, Film and theatre after studying Fashion technology in Glasgow in my early 20's, but my first sewing job was actually in Alterations in a Tailors shop. All of this experience I think helps to give me an edge and helps me to think on my feet helping people through their sewing journey.
