City of London Ghost Story Exploration Class

Ghosts of the City - what are they?

2.5 hours

Class size 1 to 20 (public classes), 4 to 30
£25 (PayPal Pay in 3 available)

Join this ghost tour in the City of London area for an experience with a difference.
This tour will guide you through some of the most historic areas of London, recounting the paranormal activities that are reported to have occurred there. But it also discusses the nature of these 'ghost stories' – what makes them so compelling, what makes them scary, and what makes them uncanny?
You will get an introduction to the ideas which have been put forward throughout the centuries about these phenomena, using concepts from such luminaries as Sigmund Freud, Henry James, and even Charles Babbage – inventor of the mechanical computer, and, perhaps surprisingly, the 'stone tapes' theory. As an exercise, at least five of the stories you hear will be made up, applying these very principles. But can you tell which of the ghost stories are real and which are fabricated by your guide?
You'll finish this thought-provoking tour not just with a new appreciation for the city's tales, but with an exercise in thinking about the nature of ghost stories generally and a new perspective on what makes them so haunting.

Over four years ago, I started working for an agency as a walking tour guide in London. Last year, I decided to set up my own agency in order to provide unique and challenging tours, often quite different from the usual tourist-focused offferings.
E.g., for Halloween/winter, I've created a ghost tour of one of the most historic areas of London - the City. So, I tell quite few ghost stories related to the location. But what is a ghost story? Do they have a common structure? They are expected to be 'uncanny', but what does that mean? Are there possible scientific explanations for the phenomena - some which do, and some which don't debunk?
Join me on a voyage of discovery; let me know your thoughts - I'm genuinely interested. And as an exercise, try to work out which of the many stories I tell have emanated from no more uncanny source than my own imagination (a minority, in fact).
