We’re passionate about craft but being able to make things you’d actually be proud to show off in your home or give as a gift. We also try to offer a range of activities that are a bit different, away from the norm but still being accessible for any level of craft skill.

Common Room is run by Vicky & Ella. Vicky is a teacher by day but also runs a perinatal mental health support group and is passionate about positive mental health. Ella has a creative background in photography and interior design and also runs her own business Ella's Garden. They've got a mutual love of craft and so decided to combine their skills and set up Common Room to facilitate other people to make and create.

Teachers were very engaging and the finished product was lovely. Very reasonably priced as well

I liked the items I made and the class was easy to follow. I wasn't sure about the venue (The Slug and Lettuce) and it might have made the class more enjoyable if there was more engagement around the craft itself, and a nicer venue! The workshop leaders were very friendly. But to be honest I would look for a workshop in a more craft/ art based setting if I was paying this kind of price.

Teacher's response

Thanks for your feedback on the Jesmonite class.
I’m happy to hear you are pleased with the trinket dish and coasters that you created.

We were really sorry to hear you were a little disappointed with the workshop, it does sound like this is largely due to the venue. I’m sorry to hear you didn’t feel relaxed in the setting.

Our aim is to provide an enjoyable afternoon or evening with a sociable element as our name suggests. The Slug and Lettuce in Sale is a smart, clean and friendly location and the reserved area that we use is separate from the rest of the bar, which is always nice and quiet on a Sunday. People can get themselves snacks and drinks and they serve lovely coffee too.

Making three Jesmonite pieces represents good value in a class price - the pricing covers the premium materials and moulds we use plus the expensive pigments.
Our class price also covers all related costs such as tuition time, insurance, fuel and marketing.

We will definitely take on some of your helpful suggestions and we do hope to see you again at a future class. Again we do appreciate your feedback and the opportunity to address your concerns.

Both teachers explaining the ins and out of a terrarium. It was interesting especially when doing your own terrarium and what plants can be used for your desired effect.

I've used common room previously and decided to book a class for my sister's baby shower, as a present.

It was a small, private class and everyone said that they really enjoyed it. Everything was provided and Ella was a great tutor. Definitely recommend.

Vicky was an amazing host, talking us through the biology of terrariums before instructing us on how to construct our own. The materials and plants provided were varied and abundant. This was such a good event to do as a team - it was cathartic, yet allowed us all to talk while we were constructing our terrariums.

Thank you Vicky for a brilliant experience!

Teacher's response

Thank you so much for your lovely review. The team were so enthusiastic and fun.

The class was great fun, and the teacher was friendly and enthusiastic. I enjoyed hearing about the different plants, soil and recommendations for different themes. The teacher gave lots of helpful tips about splitting plants, planting and how to care for it. They provided cold drinks too.

Really fun workshop! 100% recommend

Had a great time under the expert tutelage of Ella and Vicky!

We booked a private class for some team building with work mates. Everything was taken care of the location was great, all the materials were provided and we took home some really impressive items. I was pleasantly surprised that I could make something so good

The team are already thinking about booking another class!

Fun class! A chance to see what was in the soil we were using was interesting and the terrarium we made was a lot bigger than expected!

Very friendly interactive teachers. Helpful and show us what to do rather than just handout and off you go which I hate. Keep moving round to each table to assist. I enjoyed it.

Great opportunity to create something beautiful from scratch as a beginner.
It was good to interact with class members and tutors alike.
It wasn't always possible for the tutors to be available at each new part so they managed it by going round individually and in small groups which worked around well

I had a lovely time making clay flower pockets and wall hangings with some friends. Ella, who ran the class, did a wonderful job teaching us about the properties of air drying clay and how best to shape and decorate. I really appreciated Ella’s communication about the venue, which changed several times in the week leading up to the booking, and how accommodating she was with rescheduling due to train strikes. I would definitely recommend this as a nice and relaxed activity to try!

We had such a great time. There was such a variety of different plants and various decorations to use inside your terrarium. We got to learn about things you wouldn’t necessarily think about and we got to be as creative as we wanted. Our teachers were so knowledgeable and helpful and really helped everyone get the best out of the experience. I would recommend this over and over again. Thanks for such a great time.

Fantastic class, very fun and informative. Would highly recommend for everyone, not just plant enthusiasts.

Knowledgeable, friendly, helpful teachers and a lot of options for materials. The terrariums are a really nice big size and there was so much room for customisation. I was a bit hesitant at first because of not so many reviews, but this is just because the class hasn’t gone for long, it exceeded my expectations and now we have lovely closed ecosystems to show off in our home.

I wanted to celebrate my retirement with 3 good friends. Vicky, our teacher, arranged a bespoke class at Cocoa Cabana in Ancoats in Manchester. Superb food and cake and the staff were very accommodating. Vicky did an excellent, fun and informative 2 hour class on Clay Flower Pocket Sculptung. We learnt a lot, had our works to take home and I paid for extras so we now have our own clay etc to do more at home. Excellent value for money and something different to do. We will definitely be having another girlie day learning something else. A big thank you Vicky.
