Make a Marbled Ceramic Coffee Mug Clay Handbuilding Class

A relaxing session learning about slab building and marbling

2.5 hours Location Forest Gate Class size 1 to 7 (public classes), 6 to 10   £59

Important venue update: All workshops will take place at our new studio at 377 Station Road, Forest Gate.
Are you looking for a relaxing and enjoyable activity? Join us for our marbled mug making workshop, where you can sip on tea or coffee while crafting your very own coffee mug. Meet some like-minded ceramic enthusiasts at the same time.
During this workshop, you will have the opportunity to learn pottery techniques and create your own unique mug. You tutor will guide you through the process, teaching you the fundamentals of slab building and marbling, helping you to form and decorate your mug.
You will learn three different types of marbling/ neri-komi, all with different levels of difficulty!
No prior pottery experience is necessary, and all materials will be provided.
Your stoneware mug will be bisque fired and then given a layer of transparent glaze and fired to 1220C by us.
The workshop will last 2.5 hours, and you will be required to return to the studio 6 weeks later to collect your mugs once they've been fired in the kiln. Postage available at extra cost.
Please note: We strive to help you create something amazing during your pottery class. Because each piece is handmade and involves many variables (such as clay handling, glaze, and firing conditions), we’re unable to offer refunds or replacements for defects or damages that occur in items you’ve made.

  • 5/5 from Laura Furner, attended Feb 2026: Great class learning about slab-building with clay in a small group of six. Martha was a fab teacher, really relaxed and friendly, and gave great advice on working with the clay. This is a great beginner workshop, and so wonderful to work with coloured, marbled clay so that the design is part of the clay itself, rather than having to return to add glaze. Excited to see the results!
