Examine the Greens, the Stamps and Cutters

After rolling our slab bases we’ll examine the natural stems, cutters and stamps to discover we how we might best achieve the festive elements that you’d like to represent with decoration of your ceramic centre piece.

Take Inspiration from Lots of Studio Resource

I will have tons of fresh greens there for use as pressers and printing. I’ve built up plenty of resource over the years of images, tools and textile, if you need a pie rim cut, or something to make just the right impression I can often find just the right thing.

Personalisation is key!

Personalisation Is Key

Use letters, modelled pieces and small pressed attachments to really make this reflect your experiences and wishes for celebration. Maybe it’s all about the lime slices, or the evening buffet or the TV you love.. you can make your clay pieces represent this and stick them in, it all adds up to making something really special all about *your* love of Christmas. I’ll be there to guide you and help position the clay most effectively. Leave a centre space for where the candle will sit.

Start with a slab, cut to template, and then add your modelled elements to personalise. Start with a wreath-like construction and add in as you go. The finished piece will be suitable to seat a candle and attractively glazed in soft snowy white or deep forest green.
Be inspired by a mass of natural greens heaped up in my studio for us all to draw ideas from.
I’ll have cutters and leaf stamps too, and these can provide the basis for building up the border elements. Presses against natural elements become satisfying to make and very effective.
But don’t be limited by my ideas. Previous guests at these classes have branched off wonderfully to include extra joy nestled into the modelling, such as buffet scenes, toy trains, printed messages of love and joy, and even cats on sofas watching TV! I will be able to draw on years of gathered and proven tools and tricks to help you achieve your own vision.
Collect your work three weeks later from my studio or at one of my winter markets in time to take pride of place on your festive table.
What you'll get
Guests will complete a fully glazed candle setting suitable for a festive celebration with truly personal elements. This could even become a family heirloom or make a fantastic gift.

I am an experienced and friendly full time potter with a lovely working space within a vibrant makers creative community right by the Thames. I combine teaching privately and in community spaces with making hand built stoneware homewares for local sale at markets and in prize winning retailers. My ten years’ of teaching has included welcoming many individuals to my studio but also included primary to university level students, whole school arts week projects, SEN students, reach out for adults, adult and young person homeless and carers’ groups. This year I have formalised my teaching with a level 3 qualification, and also I love it, I really enjoy teaching.
It’s brilliant sharing the joy of clay work and the excitement of producing something personal or functional, & that’s even before explaining the miracle that glazing can achieve. At the end of class it’s satisfying to show the kiln and how the clay will progress through the process. And while it is such a pleasure to teach clay skills it’s also important to acknowledge the the well-being benefits, my small group classes allow for peaceful and companionable immersion in making or for a fun group when booked out by friends.
Come and share the clay! #ClayIsOurWay
