Spoon Carving Workshop for Beginners

Begin your journey into wood carving with this engaging workshop.

2.5 hours Location Abbey Wood Class size 1 to 8 (public classes), 10 to 30   £45

This beginner's class in spoon carving introduces you to the art of carving with an axe, a knife and a crook knife.
By carving a spoon, you can focus on becoming familiar with the tools of the craft without the pressure of knowing what to carve.
As you gain confidence with the tools, you begin to build a relationship with your small-scale carving and understand the subtle and addictive qualities of this new hobby.
We will use green wood, freshly cut with a high moisture content. This is a beautiful and easy way to carve wood.
You are supported through the whole process and encouraged to explore carving in your way and at your own pace. This is an exercise in slowing down and settling your attention.
All tools and materials are supplied, and at the end of the session, you will have your first carving started.
This workshop is carried out at "The Clearing", an outdoor purpose-built creative space in Lesnes Abbey Woods.
Boots and sturdy footwear must be worn (no open-toed shoes). All protective equipment is supplied.
Whatever the weather, the workshop will proceed, except under high wind conditions or lightning.
A large parachute canopy will keep you dry, and a beautiful central fire will keep you warm. A kettle on the fire will provide hot drinks to fuel you during this session. All included in the price.

  • 5/5 from Francesca Maria Orlando, attended Oct 2026: What a great day out. The location was an opportunity to explore a part of London I had never been to, and what a gorgeous spot, immersed in the woods under a simple canopy, surrounded by nature. The teacher was spontaneous, friendly and welcoming. Explained what to do at the beginning and at each crucial stage. He let us get on with it so you can freely explore the sensorial part of it all, try out any tool you want, and gave us space to Feel and be in the moment. The experience I found very Mindful. Getting the gift card was straightforward, I bought it is a 70th birthday present for my aunt.
  • 5/5 from Sarah Peace, attended Oct 2026: My husband and I did this class for our wooden wedding anniversary and we absolutely loved it! Steve was good fun and an excellent teacher, and the setting in the woods is so pretty. It was a great experience, and we will probably look to book one the other classes too.
  • 5/5 from Isabelle Drage, attended Oct 2026: A lovely morning in a gorgeous spot in the woods! Our teacher was so knowledgeable and we learned so much not just about woodwork but also the origins of words and woodland management. It was so satisfying seeing the whole journey from the tree to the spoon at the end - a wonderful and unique way to spend a morning!
  • 5/5 from Jim McHugh, attended Sep 2026: Great present from my father in law. Very experienced teacher, good quality tools, nice environment. Highly recommend it. Will be looking at their other courses.
  • 5/5 from Rob Chivers, attended Jul 2026: Stephen was excellent. You make a spoon from a log and it was brilliant. We really enjoyed it and it was worth every penny
  • 5/5 from Rita Gomes, attended Jun 2026: It was very nice! Good time to spend in the woods!! Highly recommend it
  • 5/5 from Miranda Ferrara, attended Mar 2026: We had the best time at this workshop! Steve who took the class was great and so much fun! It was lovely being outdoors, I really enjoyed it. The only downside was when the class ended- I could have stayed and whittled longer so I will definitely be booking up again!
  • 5/5 from Tim Parker-Langston, attended Jan 2026: I loved this experience. It was so relaxed and relaxing, but with great knowledge and expertise being on hand to guide the experience.
  • 5/5 from Simon Rowson, attended Jan 2026: A great class and all the family loved it, we covered all the aspects of spoon making from splitting a piece of wood through to whittling. Thoroughly recommend it to anyone thinking about giving it a go.
  • 5/5 from Samantha Syer, attended Oct 2025: Loved the venue/space, Steve’s encouragement and good tools! Atmosphere was friendly and supportive. We both came home with quite different spoons: one small and delicate for eating off, the other bigger and more robust - apparently it’ll be good for serving rice and I think it’ll be a good stirrer!
  • 5/5 from Yoli Bartlett, attended Aug 2025: Super relaxed, friendly environment. Instructors made you feel very welcome and were knowledgeable, helpful and fun! Great location too. Felt remote and tucked away in the forest but easily accessible via public transport.
  • 5/5 from James Clubbe, attended Aug 2025: Really fun experience! Knowledgeable and helpful teachers, guiding you through the carving process. Location is great! Out in a woodland clearing, with a woodfire burning, very idyllic!
  • 5/5 from Alyssa James, attended Jul 2025: I couldn’t recommend this class enough. The whole gang including volunteers were so warm and informative. They offered to help as much as I wanted and equally showed me how to do things myself in a clear, calm and safe way. I’m looking to connect with the organisation on a member basis for August and can’t wait! Be prepared not to finish your spoon but kick started on the journey.
  • 5/5 from Maria Ann, attended May 2025: I really enjoyed this workshop, nestled in the woods, protected by a canvas tent you are introduced to the joy of carving wood by hand. The teacher was very friendly, knowledgeable and passionate, upon arrival we were given a welcome introduction to the location and a bit about what we were going to be achieving during the session. We picked our own freshly cut wood and got started. The instructions were clear and the tools were explained to us, then we got whittling. I'm really proud with my final peice and would highly recommend this class. The only negatives I would have is that we were not offered any coffee or drinks as the listing states, I luckily bought my own water as it was a hot day but a coffee would have been nice. Also the location is beautiful but as it is out in the wood the teacher kept leaving to chat to friends and passers by, whilst I appreciate the community is important here, a few times I was struggling with my task and had to wait until the instructor had returned to get assistance. Overall I really enjoyed my time in the woods whittling away at my own, handmade spoon and can't wait to finish and oil it. Thank you!

  • 5/5 from Elaine Farrell, attended Apr 2019: Had a great time. Steve is an amazing teacher. All Ive done is tell everyone I know about the course and making them sign up for it I learnt new skills and over came a fear of certain tools! Will be going back to do more!
  • 5/5 from Steven Jarman, attended Mar 2019: Great introductory course to spoon carving. Fantastic workshop with free flowing tea. Stephen was an excellent instructor and very knowledgeable.

We are a nonprofit organisation based in SE London, offering wellbeing and bushcraft opportunities, we can be found in two locations, the first is our indoor space we call Creative Nature HQ located at Thames-side-studios by the river Thames and the second space is called The Clearing, an outdoor space set in the woods at Lesnes Abbey Woods.
We began in 2016, exploring an alternative way to express our creativity that looked to develop deeper connections with nature within the city. At the centre of our practice is love, generosity, humour, connection and balance. For us this is a daily practice, and we have been co creating opportunities for people to join us and experience it for themselves.
We work all year round outside in the woods and have created a space that has reached a new chapter in our story. The Clearing has taken us four years to vision, build, develop relationships with Bexley Council the land managers, fundraise, design, gain permissions and finally we opened this space September 2024! A real milestone for a tiny organisation of one paid member of staff and a beautiful network of volunteers and supporters.
Our vision holder and navigator of this organisation is Stephen Stockbridge, an artist with over 35 years of experience, building, making and creating both permanent and temporary work that has engaged and delighted participants, here and around the world.
We invite you to go beyond the transactional society we move in every day and ask you to step into a more open hearted playful space where learning and joy is as easy as breathing.
We look forward to meeting you.
