This is suitable for beginners looking to get started in sewing, providing the opportunity to get all the answers you need. It’s a great way to get a feel for your sewing machine, troubleshoot any problems you’re having with your current project in an easy, direct way or learn about features you’re not as confident with yet.

During the booking process, you’ll have the opportunity to let your Colleague know what you would like to focus on during the session. They’ll be able to prepare for a personalised workshop that answers all of your questions.

You’re sure to walk away a sewing pro, ready to take your designs to a new level!

*Please note that your workshop host will only have access to sewing machines that are currently stocked in Hobbycraft stores.

**Children 12 years and over can book onto this workshop but please note all children under the age of 18 will need parental/guardian supervision for the duration of the workshop.

Bring a friend: You can now use the £5 add-on feature at checkout to invite a friend along with you, whether you’re working on a project together or you’d simply prefer having some company during the session. Your friend can enjoy any demonstrations given, and they are free to ask questions, but they will not receive the same practical, direct one-to-one support as is offered to the lead participant.

Keeping everyone safe

At Hobbycraft, we want our workshops to be enjoyable, inclusive, and safe for everyone. Some workshops are suitable for children, and where this is the case, a parent or legal guardian is responsible for supervising their child at all times unless the workshop is clearly stated as suitable for independent attendance. Our colleagues and instructors are there to guide the activity and support a safe environment, and if any concerns about safety or wellbeing arise during a workshop, these should be raised with a member of staff straight away.

  • 5/5 from Claire J Bond, attended Jul 2026: A fantastic first sewing lesson that really built my confidence. This was my first time properly trying sewing. I do have a machine at home, but I’ve never been sure how to use it. My instructor was absolutely fantastic — patient, clear, and brilliant at breaking down each step. She demonstrated what to do, then made sure I could do it myself, taking the time to check I fully understood each part. We also walked through the project I want to start, which was incredibly helpful. I now know the best way to approach it and what techniques I’ll need. The session ran slightly over the allotted time, but I never felt rushed. She even pointed out a few items in the store that will help with my project. Overall, I’m really happy. The session has given me the confidence to continue sewing at home, and I will absolutely book again — it was such a good experience.

  • 5/5 from Debra Silvester, attended Feb 2025: Sewing class for two total novices. Learnt how to set up the sewing machine and do some basic stitches. The teacher was amazing, very informative, went through everything with simple steps, allowed sufficient time to practice and provided advice throughout. We would thoroughly recommend the class. The venue was comfortable and the materials provided were appropriate for our level. Very pleasant class, we are already planning a second. The teacher also advised on a couple of tools to help with threading needles and marking lines, both answers to points we raised.
  • 5/5 from Trish Hayes, attended Nov 2024: I was very pleased with my workshop today. I needed help with the bobbin on my machine. I could not get the tension right. Having a one to one was excellent. I was shown exactly why it was not feeding through correctly. I was shown on the Hobbycraft machines but my machine was similar and she got mine up on the Internet and showed me exactly the difference and explained my machine to me. Very good value for the money and will book another workshop again. It was a very relaxed workshop and lots of helpful tips.

  • 5/5 from Sharon Jordan, attended Jul 2024: I had a super experience in the sewing machine class, Amy was amazing at teaching me how to use and set up the machine and do some tasks, so I felt able to do these at home. Amy assisted me with information about the best machine to purchase for the things that I wanted to achieve, and I bought the machine that Amy suggested. Amy was lovely, friendly and very helpful. So a big thank you to Amy.

  • 5/5 from Lauren, attended Jun 2024: Booked this workshop for some help with sewing accuracy and zips. Amy was super friendly and helpful! Learned new things and had fun! Thanks :)
  • 5/5 from Beckie McKeever, attended May 2024: I recently took a sewing class with Amy, and I couldn't be happier with the experience. She was warm and welcoming from the start and showed genuine interest in my cosplay project: feathered gloves for a Tifa Lockhart costume. Amy's disarming personality made the hour fly by. She never made me feel like anything was unachievable or silly, even when I made mistakes, asked a lot of questions, or admitted to knowing very little about sewing. It was a real privilege to get to know and work alongside Amy. I can't wait to finish this project with her guidance. Today I left with a basic prototype.
  • 5/5 from Anonymised ClassBento customer, attended May 2024: Amy was amazing, really knowledgeable, personable and encouraging. Really safe and friendly environment, fantastic value for money. Thanks so much!
  • 5/5 from Kate, attended Mar 2024: My mom and I were looking to buy a sewing machine, as well as learn how to do embroider some items of clothing. Ella was fantastic at teaching us how to use the machine, and gave us some great embroidery tips too. She was patient, knowledgeable, and really helpful in guiding us through the sewing machine setup. We are really looking forward to booking our next workshop and visiting the Selly Oak store again soon.
  • 5/5 from Sienna Jenkinson, attended Mar 2024: Amy was brilliant. I haven't sewed for over 40 years and she taught me how to thread the sewing machine and bobbin. Had lots of great outlines on material to practice and take home too. Yes it was good value for money and loved it. I thoroughly enjoyed the one to one session and highly recommend this. Will have another session for sure in the future. Loved it and thank you Amy.
